7 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Brought together by a brutal murder, a psychological profiler whos lost her memory and a teenage boy with a fiercely guarded secret become unwitting, unlikely partners in this race to stop a killerNordic noir at its best (Booklist, starred review). Named the Best Nordic Crime Novel of the Year by the Crime Writers of Scandinavia Out of the frozen depths of a forest in Ormberg, Sweden, a woman stumbles onto the road. Her arms are covered with scratches, her feet are bare, and she has no memory of who she is. Local police identify her as psychological profiler Hanne Lagerlind-Schn, who, with her partner, had been helping investigate the cold case of a young womans murder. Hanne begins to recover but cannot recall anything about where her partner is, or what their investigation had uncovered before her disappearance. Police have only one lead: a young woman in a sequined dress who was spotted nearby the night Hanne was found. The young woman doesnt come forward because she doesnt exist: Jake Birgersson, a local teenager, had been out walking in his mothers dress and sisters makeup, his secret shame and thrill. Terrified of discovery, Jake hid and watched Hanne get into a car, leaving behind her diary. Reading Hannes notebook, Jake realizes that it contains the key to a major breakthrough in the casebut turning it in would mean admitting the truth about who he is. When another murder victim is found in the woods, Jake realizes that Hanne herself is in danger, and his only choice is to find and warn her so that together, they can stop the killer before he strikes again. Advance praise for After Shes Gone [A] stellar crime novel . . . Grebe delivers an unflinching, heart-wrenching message about the plight of refugees in this scorching thriller.Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Starting this one today. Another NetGalley title I've had for so long the author has probably written 14 more books since this one!!! Oh well, better late than never!

It took me a minute to get into this one, but I‘m glad I stuck it out. Two murders ten years apart, maybe more, a town that feels left behind-and slighted, and a boy struggling with his view of the world from where he stands…. It was hard to understand the connection between the three narrators at first, maybe something was lost in translation. But the ending was fantastic and the suspense was just right! Book #73 in 2022

ShyBookOwl I'm a sucker for a dual timeline thriller, especially with seemingly unconnected murders. I'll have to check this one out! 2y

I did enjoy the book, but not as much as the first one. The profiler does not remember what happened, but her man is gone, and so is the notebook which is basically her memory. A young boy with a secret. Asylum seakers that are not welcome in town. A cold case. Human remains. A body. Everything seems to go wrong. A police officer reluctantly returning to her hometown to work on the case. Lots of potential, interesting, but smth missing 3,5 stars

Started and finished this book in two days - what a great thriller! I enjoyed getting to know Malin, Jack, and Hanne. I really liked Jack and thought he brought a unique dimension to the story. I loved seeing his courage grow through the book. It was a good story although I have to admit, I figured out much of the plot pieces before the ending. Still loved it overall and look forward to more.

RadicalReader Thanks so much for rave reviewing this immaculate sounding novel I can‘t wait to read it too 6y

This was an interesting thriller with different parts to the story. The main story is told by Malin, Hanne and Jake who has Hanne's diary. The plot is clever and well developed. The ending was so good if quite bittersweet. It deals with some serious issues like Hanne's developing dementia and was interesting to read her diary as it progressed. Jake is another interesting character but I instantly liked him. He added more depth.
