The Two Lila Bennetts
The Two Lila Bennetts | Liz Fenton
16 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
Her past mistakes have caught up with her, and one of them may just kill her. Lila Bennett's bad choices have finally caught up with her. And one of those decisions has split her life in two. Literally. In one life, she's taken hostage by someone who appears to be a stranger but knows too much. As she's trapped in a concrete cell, her kidnapper forces her to face what she's done or be killed. In an alternate life, she eludes her captor but is hunted by someone who is dismantling her happiness, exposing one secret at a time. Lila's decorated career as a criminal defense attorney, her marriage, and her life are on the line. She must make a list of those she's wronged--both in and out of the courtroom--to determine who is out to get her before it's too late. But even if she can pinpoint her assailant, will she survive? And if she does, which parts of her life are worth saving, and which parts must die? Because one thing's for certain--life as Lila Bennett knew it is over.

This book was creatively written with two story lines running parallel. Lila is a high powered defense attorney in LA. She‘s a self-centered wife and friend who repeatedly makes decisions that hurt people. In one life, Lila is kidnapped and forced to examine her wrongdoings. In another life, Lila is free and able to examine her life choices motivated by different circumstances. The suspense continued to build. I felt like I was racing to the end!

When I saw that this book was being compared to Sliding Doors, I knew I had to read it because I love that movie. (Gweneth‘s hair! Am I right?) At a pivotal moment in Lila Bennett‘s career, she is forced to face the decisions she had made in her life. At that point, her life goes on two separate directions. Read on to follow those paths.

I loved this one!!! At first the layout of the book was a bit off putting but man once I was used to it I ate this one up. I had my guesses as to who was behind everything g but they were so wrong. I love these two authors. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

"Life can change in an instant, Lila. One decision. One wrong turn. One missed opportunity. That's all it takes. And everything you had could be gone" (loc. 4115).⠀

I listened to Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke's The Two Lila Bennetts, and Karissa Vanker provides an excellent narration of this structurally complex story. Lila Bennett is a strong, ruthless defense attorney who is cheating on her husband with her boss . . . (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod who is married to her best friend. Early in the novel, Lila makes a choice that precipitates a Sliding Doors-type split into two narratives. In one, she is continuing through her "normal" life, which is disintegrating; in the other, she is held by a kidnapper who seems determined to ruin every part of her life. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Watching the two Lilas contend with their mistakes, with their immorality, with their questionable choices AND watching them grow in different ways from their paths is fascinating. Strong suspense novel that makes me marvel, as I always do, at the collaborative potential of co-authors. 5y

What is remarkable, besides the writing, is that it totally makes you start to question some of the decisions you have made in your own life, and that there are always several possibilities in every scenario. Both endings are outstanding and overall, this book is so damn clever! This ambitious narrative style could have easily gotten away from Fenton & Steinke, but it figuratively knocked my socks off.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed the back and forth style of this book. It was like reading two books in one. The story was well written and effortless to follow.

I was not a fan of the main character due to her questionable behavior, however it did not sway me away from the book. The mystery was there and kept me guessing till the last pages. It has an unpredictable ending that left me shocked and satisfied.

I don‘t know what I was expecting, but this was not it. I wasn‘t surprised that we got to see how one woman‘s choices affected the outcomes in her life, but the way the authors handled this was spectacular, and the ending had a big impact on me. It‘s definitely a page-turner, and I‘m still thinking about the effects of daily decisions. They change everything. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I‘ll be looking for more by these two!

This was not my first book by the pair Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, I feel The Two Lila Bennetts is going to put them in a whole new class of writers. They have outdone themselves with this tale. Having two writers to tell this story, I believe made this all the more better.

Received as an ARC. At first I thought the dual story line would be confusing but Oh I could not put this one down! I had to stay up to finish it! Even though Lila Bennet is not the nicest person, you still can‘t help rooting for her... and although I eventually figured out one of the twists let‘s just say you don‘t see the end coming! @lisaandliz knocked this one out of the park! Highly recommend, such a fun read!
