The dramatic story of neighbors in a small Danish fishing village who, during the Holocaust, shelter a Jewish family waiting to be ferried to safety in Sweden. It is 1943 in Nazi-occupied Denmark. Anett and her parents are hiding a Jewish woman and her son, Carl, in their cellar until a fishing boat can take them across the sound to neutral Sweden. The soldiers patrolling their street are growing suspicious, so Carl and his mama must make their way to the harbor despite a cloudy sky with no moon to guide them. Worried about their safety, Anett devises a clever and unusual plan for their safe passage to the harbor.Based on a true story.

A well written picture book based on WW2. I say roughly suitable for 7 to 9 year olds and though the topic is heavy it isn‘t too explicit about what happened during the holocaust.

A children‘s book, yes. But the first I came across when I was searching Libby for Denmark.

I‘m all out of library books till I go back…..so thought I‘d work on my reading around the world on going challenge.

#StorySettings Day 25: From Fats‘ review: “The story focuses on a Danish couple and their daughter named Anett. Anett and her parents are hiding a Jewish woman and her son in their #cellar. ‘They are new friends,‘ said Anett‘s mother. Because their new friends would be staying with them for a couple of nights, Anett‘s mother made sure they had enough food.”

#AnglophileApril Day 17: A #CarelessWhisper may be considered dangerous in this historical fiction depicting Jewish life in Nazi-occupied Denmark. As Fats noted: “The story of The Whispering Town is loosely based on the events that happened in a small fishing village of Gilleleje. According to the Author‘s Note, about 1,700 Jews escaped from the Nazis through the help of the people of Gilleleje.” Her review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-cV4

Cinfhen Last year on Yom Hashoa ( Israel‘s National Day of Holocaust Remembrance) I attended a talk given by an older man who was a boy rescued by this town. It was a deeply moving story of such courage and bravery about this village. 6y
