This was not what I was expecting. It was even better! I thought this was a straightforward fantasy but no it was a fast paced, action packed YA adventure. Lots of hunting for treasure and fighting off baddies. A good teen read.

It's been cool and rainy here, so what better time to read a book set in the desert?? I read this book when it was published in 2019, so this was a reread because I want to finish the rest of the trilogy that has been published since then! I laughed when I read my original review, because it's pretty much still how I feel - this book has enough chaos and hand-to-hand fighting to impress even Bruce Willis, and almost absurd number of secret ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and not-so-secret societies all vying for the magical Eyes. The number of betrayals in this story started to feel a bit ridiculous, but at the same time emphasized just what everyone was willing to do to get a hold of this artifact. I absolutely loved the setting of a world that is so hot and desert-y that everyone lives underground, with literal societal levels, as only the rich can afford to live in the deeper areas. I also really like⬇ 2y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the heroine, although there were times that it felt like too many things were happening TO her instead of her being able to make things happen. Even though this is labeled YA, the protagonists are actually adults - I think the label is just because (refreshingly) there isn't any sex and there's very minimal swearing. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed rereading this one and am super excited to see what happens next. 2y

We're interpreting “third week of the month“ our own way for June's #BacklistReadathon 😂 I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to read this month. I'll either finish the Lucky Harbor series (Jill Shalvis), or read this trilogy by Maria Snyder that I've been wanting to read FOREVER - I've loved every book of hers that I've read, and this series sounds so good!!! Still have a few days to decide!!

TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - Poison Study is the first in a trilogy, and that trilogy is the first in a set of three trilogies that all go together... so nine books in all about the same characters/in the same world. I LOVE that entire series. The only confusing part is she also has a bunch of short stories/connectors on her website so it can be slightly complicated to read everything in order, but it just got better and better as the books went on!! 2y

Not sure how I feel about this one. The plot was fast paced but in a hectic way and we kept getting introduced to new characters. It was entertaining and I enjoyed the archaeological aspect of it but I‘m not sure if I‘ll pick up the second one.

Although there were times that the slightly frenetic pace made some of Bruce Willis's movies seem sedate by comparison, overall I enjoyed the characters, world-building, & plot of this one. All in all, I recommend this one. I think it's a great start to a new series, & also did an excellent job of wrapping up enough threads in this book that I didn't feel gypped, while leaving plenty of things open for the second book.
