Was way too far in to the book when I realized it was “vampirish” ~~ so, I finished instead of bailing. Okay read, enjoyed descriptions of the campus & town ~ vampire type of books are not to my liking.

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The beginning of this book reminded me of the Ti West movie The House of the Devil. It‘s a slow burn but not boring. Intriguing. Then things get crazy in a good way for Halloween 👻. I will say the ending was a little too tidy for me but I still really liked this book. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 23. #screamathon

Certainly an interesting presence. The author takes quite a while to get the story up and going. And once she does you find yourself in a twist that I can honestly say I did not see coming. All in all I‘d say an okay book, though the plot is solid and the characters interesting, the ending is a bit... odd? Not what I was expecting.

Pickpick

Okay, to be clear: view this "pick" as a subjective thing between the book and me. I am NOT recommending this book to you.

The protagonist, who appears to be lacking basic knowledge of philosophy has somehow gotten a scholarship to Oxford. The writing is kind of klutzy. There are gaping logical holes.

And yet, I totally enjoyed it. Oxford spires, dark secrets, a country estate with a freaking maze (!), cream teas, libraries & gaslighting.

This book is heavily derivative (kind of All Souls Trilogy - vampires (so far) + The Secret Circle - witches (maybe)), not incredibly well (or badly) written and I am LOVING it. Loving it. Proof that I will read anything set at Oxford or Cambridge that involves mysterious hounds-on.

Lynnsoprano Ooh, this sounds really interesting! We're going to Cambridge this summer and I am so stoked. 7y

I was very intrigued with this book's concept where a secret society murders for power. However, the book took a turn at chapter 23 with a supernatural theme. It turned out predictable and not that great. The Oxford setting was believable. I've been to Oxford so I enjoyed the detailed description.

Pickpick

Another one where I'm waffling between a "like" and a "so-so", but what it boils down to is that I can't NOT like a book about family secrets, a secret society, and a setting in Oxford. Certainly not the best of this genre, but entertaining enough.
