A pair of murders, a romance and rivals in pursuit of a long-lost vintage car of unfathomable value Bruno, chief of police, is busy in another mystery set in the beautiful Dordogne At the annual "fete" in St. Denis, Bruno s biggest worry is surviving as a last-minute replacement navigator in a car rally race. The contest and a classic-car parade are new to the festivities and draw a spate of outsiders with deep pockets, big-city egos and, in the case of a young Englishman, an intriguing story. It s the tale of a Bugatti Type 57C, lost somewhere in France during World War II. Among the most beautiful cars ever made, one of only four of its kind Ralph Lauren owns one it is worth millions and drives its pursuers mad with greed. In the midst of the festivities, a local scholar turns up dead and Bruno suspects unnatural causes. After a second death, there is mounting evidence that the events in St. Denis are linked to international crime. To make matters even more complicated, a family squabble over land brings to St. Denis a comely Parisienne who turns Bruno s head. As usual, Bruno s life offers its challenges but there is always time for a good bottle and a home-cooked meal."

Found this #10 in the series quite engaging with its new potential (?) Romance introduced, the car racing ( new area to me) & its link to a lost Bugatti that disappeared during WWIl.The scenes when Bruno becomes a passenger in a race car are convey his terror! Of course there is a murder to be solved. This series is full of culture & cuisine of the area, the perfect portrait of “farm to table”eating as routine.I drool over some of his concoctions.

Finished top row.Frankenstein is based on the Madeline stories...twelve little monsters in two straight lines...a fun alternative for 2 students of mine-others are three great mysteries, one with France as setting, the other two, England.
Almost finished with TSOAW, 1/4 way through FITS.EOP, cp 11 #audiobook- cannot say enough about this book- my husband is reading a hard copy simultaneously so we have been engaged in discussions...

Cinfhen I just ordered EoP ❣️ 4y
kspenmoll @Cinfhen Impeccable, thorough research. Reads like a novel only because he brings this family to life- 4y

Thanks to the Sunday afternoon librarian for the recommendation.

BookishMe I will start this series soon, but with the second book ;D 5y
umbrellagirl @BookishMe I always seem to muddle things and begin the middle and then go back to start. 5y
BookishMe @umbrellagirl I used to be careful to start at the beginning of a series. Since I read this 2nd book (tagged) as introduction to the series and enjoyed it greatly, I am no longer as vigilant ;p I suppose that's a sign of well-written books? 5y

4.5 ⭐ book 9 of the Bruno, Chief of Police series. I love the development of the people who live in the village of St Denis. This story of course has mystery, food, wine and romance. It also tells of the search for a one of four Bugatti's built during the 30s. It disappeared during the war, so where did it go? Recommend! @TheSpineView #SeriesRead

Reading a Bruno-book means holidays to me, as I always keep it to read when I‘m away. I like that he has friends and a life and is not the usual loner-detective. While this one‘s plot is a bit thin, it‘s still very intelligent and just a nice read after which you‘re sad that it‘s already over.
