I read the majority of another chapter and I just can‘t. I flipped through and scanned over the rest of the book.
Maybe 5 WOC mentioned (generous on 5).
Every chapter ended with a description of what that geek girl‘s ideal man. - Just no even in 2011 just let women love stuff without men involved.
It was either super current topic (Twilight) or older (Riot Grrl era).
If there is an updated edition of this book cool, it is super dated.

OrangeMooseReads 👆🏼 the idea is great, love the idea. The approach and execution terrible. More research needed to be done, more depth was needed. It needed to be about the “geek girls” it needed more about the culture not just 4-5 white women in that genre. It could have been so good. I am incredibly disappointed. 14mo

The struggle is real with this. Published in 2011 there is praise for some people that were found to be super problematic. Holy Twilight! I swear by all things if there is more about Twilight I might throw this book.
I‘m leaning hard on DFN- I just skimmed and skipped most of the “Film Geek” chapter because ALL WHITE WOMEN! All the women mentioned white all the characters white. You‘re gonna tell me there isn‘t 1 WOC that could make it in 2011?

OrangeMooseReads It was the same in the “Book Geek” chapter as well all white women. There are some amazing classics written by WOC. 14mo

I think this passage sums up why I bailed at 9%. The premise--to unite geek girls of all walks and stripes--is consistently undermined by talking down to us like we are complete outsiders to geekdom in general. It doesn't help that the book at 5 years old is already sadly dated, but clunky attempts at humor come off as more insulting than anything.
Now taking all your suggestions for nerdy, geeky, gaming, fandom-honoring books! 🤓

3% in and this is the second specific mention of a D12. While I am exaggerating when I say no one uses them, it is definitely rarely used. It's not like a D20 which is the basis of a lot of modern tabletop RPGs. Did she mean to say D20 but doesn't game so she got it wrong & editorial staff are clueless, too?
I am out-geeking the geek girl author! Gah I hope I can gloss over any more of this tiny-but-huge-to-me issues as I keep reading.

Eyelit While I didn't catch that particular gaffe (sadly not a gamer, yet), I did catch quite a few pop culture errors sprinkled throughout the book. I loved the idea of the book, but think the author could have been more knowledgeable about the subjects she wrote about. 8y

balletbookworm I gave this 3 stars when I read it. I found the smarmy, fake-friendly, frenemies tone - from a book that specifically asks us to be more welcoming to each other - a bit much to take 8y

Carol @readinginthedark oh they get used but usually either just for a particular class (barbarian) or for specific weapon damage. My point is that it's not a thing in geek gaming culture to reference d12s in a social context. Usually the saying is "she rolled a 20" or a "nat 20" (natural, without any bonuses).
