pickPowerful. Infuriating. Heart-wrenching. Important. Necessary. This is a fast read so there's no excuse not to add this to your TBR, talk it up with library patrons, and shout it from the rooftops that Dear Martin should be everyone's next book to read.
This is a debut novel for Nic Stone. Her writing is captivating and honest, sometimes raw, but definitely skilled. Her sentences reach inside the reader and draw out the anger and empathy equally.
A funny thing happened on the way to reading another book. I started reading this instead and am completely hooked.

What happens when you're 16 and decide to go to a remote hipster Quaker school because your crush said he'd be there, but he bails & leaves you there alone? You put on your big girl boots and make the most of it! I've read reviews that say our MC, Flora, grows & matures over the course of this book, so for now I'm laughing at her immaturity as she struggles to leave her vanity at the door & settle in.
THIS IS HAPPENING!!! ???????? I'm at 20% in and it's every bit as good as you'd think. When I quote him IRL I refer to him as "my Yogi, Detective Lieutenant Joe Kenda, the Homicide Hunter."

pickIf you like your romance contemporary and your YA diverse and your stories rich with cultural insights/familial expectations and your dialogue snappy and your meet-cute a total disaster to make the complex relationship that follows that much sweeter--and even if (especially if) none of these is your jam--I highly recommend you pick up When Dimple Met Rishi, which publishes May 30th.
Spotted some Litsy love in the March/April 2017 issue (received in the mail today) of Public Libraries Magazine, the official publication of the Public Library Association. 😍
This book is bad. So bad. Dated celebrity references abound, as does insulting assumptions about the reader. I'm actually just hate-reading at this point because I want to see how many ideas she has herself and how many are actually lifted directly from experts like Michelle Phan. Then I got to this section and I about died. What. The. Hell?!
Help me Dimple, girl. You're my only hope for climbing up out of this reading slump!

pickKamau has written an insightful look into both the comedy world and the inherent racism people of color, but especially Black men, face every day. There's an author's note in the back of my galley where Kamau promises more content in the final copy on the current administration and political situation. I can't wait! And luckily you don't have to wait long, either, since this book hits shelves May 2nd.

This book is completely gorgeous and hyped to the hilt (movie rights already sold!). Despite the way I tend to hide from hype this book is so far (chapter 7) living up to it. I'm calling it now: Caraval will be a book subscription feature in January or February. Looking at you, OwlCrate!
