I love learning history through well-researched historical fiction. I'm good with a little time-travel, too. Zetta Elliot was definitely inspired by Octavia Butler, and she also did her research. Elliot speaks highly of the Weeksville Heritage Center; I'd love to visit someday. Stepping back into the Brooklyn of 1863 with main character Gemma was both scary & fascinating. Recommended.

Homework, week 7.

Have you ever read a book and gotten so engrossed in the story you forgot a huge detail that was mentioned in the summary? I was so interested in Genna's story in the modern Brooklyn that I totally forgot about the time travel plot until Part II blindsided me. Elliott does a great job writing complex and engaging characters in both modern and historical settings. Now, I just need to get my hands on the sequel. #2017Book19 #diversebooks #ownvoices

Anyway, A Wish After Midnight is an excellent YA version of Octavia Butler's Kindred. A young woman is transported back in time to the 19th century she & must face the harsh realities of that world. It's powerful, brutal, & honest. Read it!
