Heaven, Texas
Heaven, Texas: Number 2 in series | Susan Elizabeth Phillips
10 posts | 36 read | 3 to read
Former sports star Bobby Denton has agreed to lend his fame and his name to a movie. But when he doesn't show up the film company sends straight-laced Gracie Snow to bring him to the set with surprising results. Despite his dazzling good looks and killer charm, Bobby has reservations about being a movie star - and no plans to cooperate with anyone from the studio, let alone shy little Gracie. But though she comes across as a wallflower, Bobby soon discovers Gracie is really a steel magnolia and the more time he spends in her company the more he finds himself drawn to this plain Jane with a heart of gold . . .

Y‘all, Bobby Tom does so many awful things near the end of HEAVEN, TEXAS that he should‘ve killed my love for this book. Like, seriously. The dude barrels into what-even-is-consent territory, with a major side of emotionally stunted fuckwittedness.

But I still love the thing overall, because it‘s mostly charming and good-hearted and sometimes I like problematic media. 🤷‍♀️

HeyT That's generally my feelings about most of her books. 4y

I‘m really enjoying my first Susan Elizabeth Phillips novel! Yeah, there‘s some dodgy stuff—it‘s a romance from 1995–but there‘s also a ton of charm and heart. I‘m eager to dive back in.

This vegan dip I picked up this morning is pretty good, too. It‘s got a bit of an odd aftertaste, but nothing I can‘t live with.

CarolynM I can imagine her early books would be a bit dated. I wonder how my favourite of hers would hold up? 4y
xicanti @CarolynM ooh, that one sounds fun! I‘ll just over halfway through HEAVEN, TEXAS, and it‘s convinced me I want to read more from her. 4y

Last day with the challah; first day with a new book. To be honest, I wouldn‘t have stuck HEAVEN, TEXAS in my library sale bag if I‘d realized it was first published in 1995. It‘s not a universal rule, by any means, but I find older romances are way more likely to lean into alpha male bullshit, women who abandon their agency because of abs, and other tropes that‘re auto-bails for me. Lots of Littens love Phillips, though, so I‘m going in!

I‘m gonna post a book (or series) from my TBR every day until I‘ve shared the lot. No descriptions. No explanations. Just a whole bunch of books I haven‘t read yet.

This is Day 32.

#LaTBRrevealed

CarolynM I've read and enjoyed quite a few of Susan Elizabeth Phillips's books. Don't think I've read this one, though. 4y
xicanti @CarolynM I rarely read romances as old as this one (I think the copyright is mid-90s?), but I really like the premise! Hopefully it works out for me. 4y
Updrifting Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a national treasure. 4y
xicanti @Updrifting I‘m looking forward to her. 4y

🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐
While the story fell a little flat for me I really enjoyed Bobby Tom and Gracie. A lot more of the sassy dialogue and comic drama SEP does so well was present in this book compared to the 1st book. I thought it was a fun book that I had a great time reading. #romansty #osrbc

MarriedtoMrT Her stories can be a bit ridiculous but I love the interactions between her main characters, at least during this time in her writing. 8y
Deebee @MarriedtoMrT the character interactions are exactly what I am enjoying most about her writing. I love good sassy dialogue. 8y
