Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose
Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose | Gillian McCain
They call me a freak. I'm sick of it. It makes me want dangerous, bad things. Drugs-hard drugs-and people who are bad for me, but I don't care, because I'm so lonely and no matter what their intentions are at least they're talking to me...They say that high school is supposed to be the best time of your life. But what if that's just not true? More than anything, Mary Rose wants to fit in. To be loved. And she'll do whatever it takes to make that happen. Even if it costs her her life.Told through the raw and unflinching diary entries of a real teen, Mary Rose struggles with addiction, bullying, and a deadly secret. Her compelling story will inspire you-and remind you that you're not alone."Mary Rose's diary is a heart-wrenching tale of a young girl trying to figure everything out."-VOYA "The writing style has a beautiful lyricism... Readers will appreciate this unflinchingly honest work."-School Library Journal

Mehso-so

I finished it and while the format was interesting, I just thought it flew by pretty fast. I could barely keep track of all the names and things going on. Mary is a sick girl, who also struggles with alcohol/drug usage throughout the book. Idk if I would revoke this to anyone or not.

Bailedbailed

Okay y‘all. Ketamine (edit- is not well metabolized) orally. It has to be snorted or injected to be abused. (I‘m a vet.)

It seems this book is somewhat based in reality from what I‘ve seen on the internet. Idk. The unfiltered thoughts of most 16 year olds aren‘t that interesting to me, and Mary Rose, if she is real, isn‘t exceptional.

Perhaps her “normalcy” (if one can consider extreme drug use normal) draws some people to this. Not me. Bail.

Megabooks Okay, I found a site online talking about ketamine pills, but as far as I know, they are produced illegally and not on the market, at least in the US. 4y
Jaimelire @Megabooks Just based on that one sentence, think I would have bailed on this one too . 4y
Megabooks @Jaimelire Thank you!! I just bought Flea‘s memoir, and it‘s a lot better book than this. I‘m glad I returned Dear Nobody to the library!!! 4y

This is supposed to be a real-life 16 year old waxing poetic on a drug intake form. A drug intake form at rehab?? Really?? I‘m really having a hard time believing this is real.

There‘s also a passage about ketamine that I believe proves it is fake, but I‘m doing some research to make sure I‘m right.

Crazeedi I think some users do ketamine, but I'm not positive, its horrific 4y
Caterina Sounds like one of those fake teenage diaries marketed at teens to scare them away from drugs, written by adults who don't understand teens or teen drug use 😂🙄 Keep us updated on if your research proves it's fake! 4y
Megabooks @Crazeedi oh I know that ketamine is stolen and diverted from vets - I am one. It was a matter of how the drug can be used. Whether it‘s a valid, let‘s say, point of entry in the body. 4y

Megabooks @Caterina definitely! I‘m not going to look it up on the internet until I‘m done, but it seems fake. 4y
marleed This type of writing always pull me back to the James Frey, a million little pieces thing. It‘s such a punch in the gut to market fiction as nonfiction when fiction rooted in truth can be so powerful. 4y
Megabooks @marleed Exactly!! Plus it just makes teens distrustful of nonfiction. 4y
Crazeedi @Megabooks you definitely know more than me on that subject, so sad 4y
Megabooks @Crazeedi It is sad. If she was a real girl, I feel terrible her life was so difficult. If it‘s some kind of lie to teens to scare them off drugs, like Go Ask Alice, then shame of the publisher. I hate “nonfiction” that is really fiction. 4y

Pickpick

This was a quick-paced, heart wrenching book. Poor Mary Rose was dealt a horrible hand in life. I would love some proof that this is in fact a true diary of the teenaged girl. Even if fictional, I would recommend this. An insightful look into the life of a lonely teenager who only knows how to cope with substances and putting herself in danger continously.

So far this book is pretty heart wrenching. I read through most of it in one sitting last night. I really feel for Mary Rose.

This book was a hard read but it was very insightful to a young troubled girls mind. I don't know what to really say about Dear Nobody, because it's speechless really. But I would recommend reading it because it's like Looking for Alaska, Thirteen reasons why, etc. It's inspiring to those who have struggled and have/ had a rough upbringing. It was inspiring to me. I would read this book again. *Do not read if currently struggling with drugs*
