Dive from Clausen's Pier
Dive from Clausen's Pier | Ann Packer
7 posts | 47 read | 10 to read
How much do we owe the people we love? Is it a sign of strength or weakness to walk away from someone in need? These questions lie at the heart of Ann Packer's intimate and emotionally thrilling new novel, which has won its author comparisons with Jane Hamilton and Sue Miller. At the age of twenty-three Carrie Bell has spent her entire life in Wisconsin, with the same best friend and the same dependable, easygoing, high school sweetheart. Now to her dismay she has begun to find this life suffocating and is considering leaving it-and Mike-behind. But when Mike is paralyzed in a diving accident, leaving seems unforgivable and yet more necessary than ever. The Dive from Clausen's Pier animates this dilemma-and Carrie's startling response to it-with the narrative assurance, exacting realism, and moral complexity we expect from the very best fiction.

Finishing this one gives me another #BookSpinBingo on my card. 😀 @TheAromaofBooks

Packer delivers a beautifully subtle story about relationships and how one incident can alter the course of your life. This book does a great job of exploring how our choices can change not only our lives, but also the lives of those we care about.

I felt the characters were honest and the situations they found themselves in relatable. Overall, a good read.

I WANTED to like this book.

But it just was not a book worth liking.

Mike suffers after a tragic diving accident, and when he is at his lowest, his “love” runs off in search of herself.

I did not connect with the characters at all, and probably you know how this is going to end just by one sentence description.

Not the book for me, and truthfully I wouldn‘t recommend it to anyone. Very slow. No real plot development. No twists.

No good.

“How much do we owe the people we love?”

Great quote to sum up this book thus far.

Concerned that I‘m developing a dislike for our main character. I‘m about a third of the way through.

This book made me so angry as it wrapped up. While it is beautifully written. The main character, Carrie, just upset me so much I almost bailed. Her choices were authentic but also very enraging . im glad i finished but dont know who i would rec this book too.

Samplergal I liked it. I remember being frustrated with her choices as well. 5y

From page one the story is predictable. She‘s going to leave Mike but the accident halts that plan and then meets Kilty or whatever and from that moment they were bound to fall I love. Gave up after 100 pages and then read the last ten to see if I was right (I was)

Carrie's actions were influenced by her feeling #guilty over Mike's accident. #fallintobooks @RealLifeReading

This book presented itself to me in an airport at a time when I was dealing with a lot of unanswered questions. It helped me sort things out and played a big role in shaping my future. I forgot about this book for a long time and thought about it again recently. I may have to revisit Ann Packer.
