It's 1952 and the Scott family has just moved from Los Angeles to London. Here, fourteen-year-old Janie meets a mysterious apothecary and his son, Benjamin Burrows - a fascinating boy who's not afraid to stand up to authority and dreams of becoming a spy. When Benjamin's father is kidnapped, Janie and Benjamin must uncover the secrets of the apothecary's sacred book, the Pharmacopoeia, in order to find him, all while keeping it out of the hands of their enemies - Russian spies in possession of nuclear weapons. Discovering and testing potions they never believed could exist, Janie and Benjamin embark on a dangerous race to save the apothecary and prevent impending disaster. Together with Ian Schoenherr's breathtaking illustrations, this is a truly stunning package from cover to cover.

I purchased this book for an avid young reader, and wanted to make sure it was appropriate for her. She's reading at an 8th grade level already and only 10. I liked the plot, it was a fun book with enjoyable little twists. The $1 bin did not disappoint ♡

I recommend this to new readers, for Fall/Halloween reading.🍁🎃🍁🎃🍁

📚📚 Happy Reading! 📚📚

#BookishMail in the form of #BookSleeves by @craftshley ❤️ These will be the last book Sleeves ever delivered to this address. Can't believe we are finishing packing tomorrow! These two sleeves are great for getting my last day. They fit hardbacks like The Apothecary and The Apprentice with plenty of room left over. Wonderful padding and as always, beautiful designs. #ProtectYourBooks

At my daughter's middle school, there are 10-12 teams every year who compete to represent the school at the regional level. The intramural battles take *two days* and have evolved into bracket play. This year, my daughter's team was seeded No. 1; and made it all the way to the final battle before losing to last year's winners. Still, *I am so proud!* 16 books that you need to know inside-out to be able to answer questions about them... Whew!

Hooked_on_books Now that's a great sport! 8y

Picked this up totally for the cover, but I loved it! It's YA historical fiction with international intrigue. Spies mixed with Harry Potterish elements after WW II. Fun!
