Dinosaurs Rediscovered
Dinosaurs Rediscovered | Michael J. Benton
'If you want to know how we know what we know about dinosaurs, read this book!' Steve Brusatte'I defy anyone who is, like me, a non-scientist to read it and not feel a sense of wonder' Tom Holland, GuardianOver the past twenty years, the study of dinosaurs has changed from natural history to a true scientific discipline. New technologies have revealed secrets locked in the prehistoric bones in ways that nobody predicted - we can now work out the colour of dinosaurs, their bite forces, top speeds, and even how they cared for their young. Remarkable new fossil finds, such as giant sauropod dinosaur skeletons from Patagonia, dinosaurs with feathers from China, and even a tiny dinosaur tail in Burmese amber - complete down to every detail of its filament-like feathers, skin, bones, and mummified tail muscles - have caused media sensations. New fossils are the lifeblood of modern palaeobiology of course, but it is the advances in technologies and methods that have allowed the revolution in the scope and confidence of the field. Dinosaurs Rediscovered gathers together all the latest palaeontological evidence and takes us behind the scenes on the expeditions and in museum laboratories, tracing the transformation of dinosaur study from its roots in antiquated natural history to a highly technical, computational, and indisputably scientific field today. Benton explores what we know of the world of the dinosaurs, how dinosaur remains are found and excavated, and especially how palaeontologists read the details of the life of the dinosaurs from the fossils - their colours, their growth, feeding and locomotion, how they grew from egg to adult, how they sensed the world, and even whether we will ever be able to bring them back to life. Dinosaurs are still very much a part of our world.

This book was recommended to me because I really enjoyed Steve Brusatte's The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. A lot of this books is about the advancements made in paleontology, but there are plenty of new, exciting dino-data to entertain dinosaur enthusiasts. 4 💥💥💥💥

This is not surprising to me at all given I've read recent dinosaur stuff and have done so recently, but it's kinda restful to drop back into this old an obsession for a while.

Finally my book order arrived, I nearly lost all hope. 😅 The Macfarlane book is a beauty, I hope it lives up to my sky high expectations.

And please, dear and lovely new dinosaur treasure, please do not be a disappointment. I was one of the few who did not enjoy The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, so now I am wary..

Freespirit Lots of reading pleasure ahead for you? 5y
Briary @Freespirit Lots and lots 😁 My TBR is out of control, but oh well.. 5y

Not only was this a cool book with excellent dinosaur information, it was also a fascinating look at the methods behind paleontology research. I never imagined they used so many different methods. I was really surprised to see how much big data is used in researching my favorite fossils. It was an amazing look at the history and future of paleontology. This is a great companion piece to The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs! #nonfiction

Just got my hard copy today and wanted to get a picture of my 2019 dinosaur book with my 2018 one! I‘m quite proud of my dinosaur book collection! 🦕 🦖

wanderinglynn Those both sound really interesting. 🦕 6y
Geeklet @wanderinglynn The tagged book was fantastic. I really enjoy nonfiction books and I thought it was the best nonfiction I read last year. 6y

RamsFan1963 I loved The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. I will definitely stack the other book 6y
Geeklet @RamsFan1963 So far, it‘s good. I‘m nearly finished with the first chapter. The author makes the material very accessible but there are some charts that are a little difficult to understand. It‘s a very very minor complaint. 6y
Moony I love dinosaurs 🦕 6y
