The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World | Steve Brusatte
For fans of Sapiens, Your Inner Fish, The Sixth Extinction, and I Contain Multitudes, a sweeping narrative scientific historythe only one of its kindthat tells the epic story of the dinosaurs, examining their origins, their habitats, their extinction, and their living legacy, from one of the most accomplished young paleontologists in the world today. In this ambitious and engrossing narrative history that spans nearly 200 million years, Stephen Brusatte, a young American paleontologist who has emerged as one of the foremost stars of the fielddiscovering ten new species and leading groundbreaking scientific studiestells the complete story of the life and death of the dinosaurs. Brusatte follows these magnificent creatures from the Early Triassic period at the start of their evolution, roughly 250 million years ago, through the Jurassic period to the end of the Cretaceous period (66 million years ago), when a giant meteor struck the earth and all non-bird species went extinct. Brusatte traces their evolution from small shadow dwellersthemselves the beneficiaries of a mass extinction caused by volcanic eruptions at the beginning of the Triassic periodinto the long-necked, armored carnivores we are familiar with today. This gifted scientist and writer re-creates the dinosaurs heyday, when thousands of speciesincluding fearsome predators such as Tyrannosaurus rexthrived, and winged and feathered dinosaurs, the prehistoric ancestors of more than 10,000 modern bird species, emerged. Brusatte recalls compelling stories from his decade-long journey studying these legendary beasts during one of the most exciting eras in dinosaur research, and offers thrilling accounts of some of the remarkable discoveries he has made, including primitive human-sized tyrannosaurs, monstrous carnivores even larger than T. rex, and raptor dinosaurs from China. An electrifying scientific history and biography that unearths the dinosaurs epic saga, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs will be the definitive narrative history of the subject for years to come.

I expected this book to be about dinosaurs. Contrary to the title and jacket description, this book is mostly about paleontology NOT dinosaurs. I am not interested in paleontology. The bits about dinosaurs (what they hunted, how they lived, how they died, etc.) were great. Unfortunately, that was only about 1/3 of the book.

If you care about how scientist figure this stuff out though, you may love this.

As I have mentioned before, I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was a kid. I read every book about dinosaurs in my library & saw the first Jurassic Park in the movie theater more than once. So, Brusatte's book is right up my alley. Filled with offbeat characters, this is science writing the way I like it- engaging & informative. I am excited by the major discoveries that continue to be made in paleontology.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m looking forward to reading this one! 4mo

A modern palaeontologist provides a detailed narrative of our current understanding of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs. Key takeaway for me were that these creatures were not evolutionary dead ends. They were magnificent creatures, which ruled this world for a lot longer than have, that continued to evolve including developing feathers and that their end was due to a seemingly chance occurrence while they were still at the top of their game.

An interesting book that talks about the time just before to just after the dinosaurs. Brusatte does a great job of conveying scientific knowledge in an understandable way and has a tendency to take a bit of artistic license. He's also good at explaining what is fact and what are knowledgeable guesses and how they got there. I learned a lot of fascinating info about the dinosaurs, other creatures they lived alongside, and the planet.

I never outgrew my childish fascination with dinosaurs, so I was always going to love this one. I've seen some criticism of Brusatte's personal and anecdotal style, but that didn't bother me at all. It takes the tone of someone geeking out over something he loves and is super excited to have found an audience who wants to hear all about it. I found it endearing.

Oh hell yes! This is what I like to read!
It's non-fiction but it's not dry. It constantly demands your attention, leading you through the alien world of the Dinosaurs and the scientists that discover and study them, mystifying and educating in equal parts. This book was pretty much all I hoped it would be, and maybe even a little more. So much love for this book 🦕❤🧡💛🦖

Moony Oh I love dinosaurs, too. Is the English difficult? (I don't forget your letter and I hope I have time to answer you, soon.) 7mo
TCLinrow @Moony I didn't find it too bad; there were quite a lot of sciency words but they made sense because it was normally explained straight after. Catt I love this book and I got the audiobook, too. Such a fun read. Has science if you‘re sciencey but you can gloss over it if you‘re not. Rocks record history; they tell stories of deep ancient pasts long before humans walked the Earth. And the narrative in front of us, written in stone, was a shocker. That switch in the rocks, detectable perhaps only to the overtrained eyes of a scientist, documents one of the most dramatic moments in Earth history...👇

The author built his career on becoming an expert of dinosaur "genealogy," so he probably has one of the clearest ideas of current paleontologists about how they evolved and thrived. Plus he uses plainspeak, so it's like a readable documentary.
