Love, suspicion, and heartbreak collide in an evocative debut novel which will draw you in with clever twists and turns, and enticing secrets Fifteen-year-old Betty Broadbent helps her erratic and beautiful mother run the Hotel Eden, a boarding house now besieged by reporters, keen for juicy gossip and eye-catching headlines. They are there because the Cornish seaside town has recently witnessed a string of murders, young girls stabbed to death. Among the newspaper jackals, Mr. Gallagher stands out. Quiet, serious Mr. Gallagher Betty is fascinated by his mysterious nature and desperate to be noticed by him and not be treated as a child. As he and Betty get to know each other, through snatched conversation and illicit meetings, their feelings for each other grow. But she soon starts to realize how little she knows about the older, enigmatic journalist. With a dangerous cloud looming over the town, Betty starts to take risks to see him and hide secrets from her mother, her friends, and even herself secrets that will echo through the years and affect the lives of many. Beautifully written with skilllfully drawn characters, evocative language, and set partially in 1956 with perfect period depiction, this is an astonishing tour de force from debut author Laura Powell."

This was a pretty quick read. Some people really didn‘t like this, but I found it enjoyable and definitely a diverting read. I know the underage girl and older man romance turned some people off but it was still a solid story

Listened to the audiobook. I can see why this is good - well-written, has a major unexpected plot development, and stays with you when you‘ve finished it. I just couldn‘t like it, I think because there was such unhappiness in it, it was too much for me.

Hmm, somewhere between so-so and pick. This was very good at the beginning, i was loving it, but it kinda lost steam as it went. I am not sure quite when or why I started to struggle with it, then the ending just didn't sit well either. #goodreadsgiveaway

A book with great promise that was brought down by odd nouns, lazy plotting and an ending that delivered neither suspense nor answers.

RaimeyGallant I'm enjoying your reviews. 6y

I am having a very slow start in my reading. This is the second book I have finished so far in September. I enjoyed the structure this novel with the split timelines. I was enjoying the characters and then got hooked into the mystery. I don't read much mystery, so a seasoned mystery reader may find this a slow pace. I read a lot of historical and literary fiction so it was just right for me. 3.5 🌟

I feel a wide-range of emotions for this one. Pros and cons but mainly cons for me. Touted for “fans of Louise Penny”, this confuses me because, um, no. 🙁 That‘s 2 for 2 duds from Netgalley so far. Ouch.

cj82487 I just got an email about this one. I'm always seary when they compare to a well-known or a favorite author bc it rarely lives up to the hype. I just went through a dud phase with NetGalley too. 😒 Fingers crossed you find something good soon 7y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @cj82487 thanks! I stepped away from reading my Netgalley books and decided to pull from my shelves the ones that interested me most - not the ones I felt I “had” to read. It‘s been working out! 😊 7y
cj82487 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Oh i totally understand that. I love NetGalley but sometimes I feel pressured to read, which isn't fun. 7y
