Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Mehso-so

Some interesting analysis, some ridiculous reaching. His comments on the animal groom type stories leave me somewhat sceptical of his research, as he insists that males become beastly but animal brides are beautiful. That totally ignores the Loathly Lady stories -- a particular interest of mine since in some examples she's paired with the Arthurian Sir Gawain. Bettelheim's theory doesn't account for her at all.

I am finding some of his analysis and the way he relates fairytale to what children experience fascinating. Then there's the stuff which is just reaching way too far.
