So many good lessons in this book... big feelings are ok if you know how to channel them, sometimes you just need a friend and everyone deserves a second chance! So many feels...
“But suddenly, if you get to thinking about things too hard, well, then nothing seems easy anymore.“
I would consider using this book in my classroom as a piece of literature for children to read in order to understand the feelings of Trent, the main character, and be able to relate or pick out his emotions.
Lost in the Sun written by Lisa Graff. Chapter 1 p.5-16. Introduces Trent Zimmerman, an almost 6th grader and “his book of thoughts“ that his counselor gave him after a horrible accident happened, involving the death of another student. This book doesn't portray the realities of a child's life but it is written in a way that maybe a child can relate to if they had gone through a similar experience of grief.
That's the day I figured out that no matter how hard you tug something, no matter how bad you want it, sometimes it just can't be pried free.
I would for sure put this book in my classroom. The characters are compelling and intriguing for any child.
This book does a really good job relating to most children, while teaching them new lessons. The main characters are relatable boys and anyone with siblings can relate to their experiences. These boys could fit into society today as the author did a wonderful job writing them.
I like this book because it involves two kids in middle school who become friends because they feel they do not fit in and no one understands them. They help each other get through the trauma in both of their lives.
This book is about a young boy who is trying to redeem himself. Trent was playing ice hockey on a lake with his friends when an accident happened and he believes it's his fault. His parents are divorced and both parents have a new boyfriend/girlfriend, so he is dealing with a lot hoping that middle school will be a fresh start. I think this would be a great book to read since it has many situations which are relatable to children's reality.
This seems good, but it doesn't seem like it is too relatable for most children. I do like that it brings up the topic of accidents happening and how to move on from them.
Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff is a piece of contemporary realistic fiction. It was published in 2015. This story is about Trent who accidentally hit his friend in the chest with a hockey puck. His friend had a heart condition and ended up dying as a result. His town hates him so he goes to a new middle school and meets this girl who he is determined to learn more about. This seems like a very intense book, not too sure how relatable it is.
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here
comes the sun
Here comes the sun, and I say
It's all right🎶
It‘s all about a fresh start...

I love the vibrance in the cover of the book, I think it is red representative of some of the feelings Trent has within the story.
This books is realistic in the sense that Trent it trying to recover from an accident and create a fresh start at school. I think this is something may kids have desired or thought about and it helps them to relate to the plot.
This book can relate to many children and their experiences in middle school.
This books shows how there can be fresh starts to ones life after times where someone needs change. Life can get complicated and everyone needs a chance for a redo. Trent has had a tough school year, getting caught up in everything, who needs to break free even though it may not be easy. Genre: Realistic Fiction; Published: 2015
“I didn‘t care. I was running, pushing through zombies, the witches, the ninja turtles, trying to find her. Fallon. Trying to breathe.”
This is a story about finding a fresh start and discovering who you are. It is a story about friendship during a time in life when change is so common.
This book was written in 2015 and published by Penguin Group. It is a realistic fiction novel about a young boy named Trent. It takes place during his middle school years. Trent find himself caught up in the whirlwind that is Fallon Little, a mysterious young girl. It is a story about growing up and facing hard times.
I think Lost in the Sun is a great book about starting over and making new friends. I think students will relate to this feeling of wanting a fresh start and enjoy this book.
Lost in the Sun is a book about a young boy starting middle school who is looking for a fresh start. He thinks about joining the baseball team. Soon he meets a new friend with a scar across her face. This is a great book about friendship.
Good story about forgiveness. The young characters are all excellent portrayals; Trent, Fallon, Jeremiah, Annie, Doug and Aaron. I was surprised the adults characters didn‘t have this young man in counseling. Ms. Emerson comes the closest with her “wax on, wax off” example with her plants. All in all a good story.
I want more! ❤️ I love stories in which characters overcome huge emotional/ psychological challenges, and I didn't want this one to end. Lisa Graff is fantastically skilled at writing middle grade voices.
I'm supposed to be reading the chosen book for my book club, but I'm not that into it. So I started this one because I did not want to move from my spot by the fire and it was literally within reach. My 12-year-old says it's great. 🤞🏼
This was painfully beautiful. I ached for Trent. I loved his resolution.
5 stars. This book tackles some tough topics--grief, anger, bullying--and Trent is a great narrator. I love Fallon and her attention to detail in movies, and Ms. Emerson is wonderful. Highly recommend!
Great book for middle schoolers, especially baseball fans--accessible and funny while also introspective and touching.
