In Together Tea, Marjan Kamalis delightful and heartwarming debut novel, Darya has discovered the perfect gift for her daughters twenty-fifth birthday: an ideal husband. Mina, however, is fed up with her mothers years of endless matchmaking and the spreadsheets grading available Iranian-American bachelors. Having spent her childhood in Tehran and the rest of her life in New York City, Mina has experienced cultural clashes firsthand, but shes learning that the greatest clashes sometimes happen at home. After a last ill-fated attempt at matchmaking, mother and daughter embark on a return journey to Iran. Immersed once again in Persian culture, the two women gradually begin to understand each other. But when Mina falls for a young man who never appeared on her mothers matchmaking radar, will Mina and Daryas new-found appreciation for each other survive? Together Tea is a moving and joyous debut novel about family, love, and finding the place you truly belong.

I wanted a quickie read for the airplane so I pulled this up. Expected it to be a typical matchmaker romance, but I was pleasantly surprised—it had more depth and nuance than that, and the romance thread wasn‘t even the main part of the story. I also liked that it included facts and events from Persian history that I didn‘t know.

Plans for the first part of my holiday break: finish my last #crossstitch present (geraniums for my grandma) while listening to Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon by Malcolm Gladwell (not in Litsy database yet). Together Tea is up next for my print book. #audiostitching

Book 115

I listened to this novel told through alternating perspectives of a Tehrani mother and daughter living in the US. It's the familiar theme of straddling two cultures. Meh.

I just loved The Stationary Shop, so I decided to give this one a try. Mina immigrated to the US from Iran as a child and is now trying to navigate her mother‘s desire for her to marry. Kamali does a beautiful job of balancing backstory and current story as well as having tragedy and difficulty threaded through with humor. I would not have thought her books would be my cup of tea, but I find they hit the spot.

ravenlee My cup of tea...I see what you did there. 😉 4y

I‘m a born and bred Southern girl, but this tea was just too sweet for me. Characters felt flat, plot had potential but ended up being too predictable (too much romance for my taste) and the end tied everything up in a neat and tidy bow. 2.5/5 ⭐️

A well done story about emigration and immigration as well as the loss of family bonds. What was especially well done was Mina's sense of displacement, despite assimilating in the US at a young age, and feeling like she didn't belong either in the US or in Iran. And, I loved the reunion scene that Mina and her mother had with her relatives when they went back to visit them. I did feel a lot of stress and tension during all the airport scenes.
