The Swimming Pool
The Swimming Pool | Louise Candlish

'I can't take my eyes off the water. Can you?' It's summer when Elm Hill lido opens, having stood empty for years. For Natalie Steele - wife, mother, teacher - it offers freedom from the tightly controlled routines of work and family. Especially when it leads her to Lara Channing, a charismatic former actress with a lavish bohemian lifestyle, who seems all too happy to invite Natalie into her elite circle. Soon Natalie is spending long days at the pool, socializing with new friends and basking in a popularity she didn't know she'd been missing. Real life, and the person she used to be, begins to feel very far away. But is such a change in fortunes too good to be true? Why are dark memories of a summer long ago now threatening to surface? And, without realizing, could Natalie have been swept dangerously out of her depth? Praise for The Swimming Pool 'Exquisitely written and addictively dark, The Swimming Pool is sheer perfection' Clare Mackintosh, author ofI Let You Go 'Gripping from start to finish, it wrapped itself around me and swept me along in its wake. I loved it and simply did not want it to end' Rosanna Ley 'Clever, atmospheric and ridiculously addictive' Kate Riordan 'As languidly seductive as summer itself, this is a tense, unsettling tale about the secrets and lies submerged beneath the smooth surface of a leafy London neighbourhood lido. Bravo, Louise Candlish!' Tammy Cohen 'Smart and gripping from start to finish - I didn't see any of the twists coming. I loved it!' Isabelle Broom, author and Heat Books Reviews Editor Praise for Louise Candlish 'A master of her craft' Rosamund Lupton 'A thriller novel meets soap opera with hints of Rear Window . . . addictive and fun . . . it will keep you guessing until the end' Stylist 'Absorbing, perceptive and gripping' Daily Mail 'Louise Candlish's stories don't shy away from life's more painful and emotional moments' Glamour 'Tense, twisty and completely addictive, will keep you guessing right until the end' Good Housekeeping

This one was FAR less successful. At times I found myself shouting, “Just tell us what happened at the pool already!” And one of the “twists” was snort worthy. I am a fan of Candlish but this wasn‘t one of her better efforts.

TrishB Won‘t be rushing to read it! 1y

MicheleinPhilly @BarbaraBB Thank you, Barbara. I do have a great support system and they have been holding me up this month. Some days are ok, some days are absolutely horrible. I‘m just trying to give myself the grace to feel what I feel and not put too many expectations on myself. Thank you for reaching out. ❤️ 1y

It‘s not that I didn‘t like the quality of writing, that was very good. My issue with this book is the storyline or lines. This is my first book of hers chosen for our next book club. It left me feeling very flat and in need of a more cheerful next book

This was a good book but I‘m just not sure it completely delivered. The opening is so dramatic and frightening, that while the rest of the book was a good drama which kept me wondering what was going on, it just didn‘t quite add up. I‘ve read others by Candlish and will try more, but this just wasn‘t quite what I wanted. Plus, my own fault but it‘s a big hardback and I read most of it while lying in the garden so got arm ache 😂😂

Book club read this month... I'm not that keen so far although it's a simple read. I do like that there are flash backs but feel the build up is not going to be necessary. I wouldn't have chosen this without book club influence so am pleased to be pushed to read something different!
