"A first-rate choice for fans of intelligent historical romances."Library Journal, starred review Amid the mayhem of the Civil War, Iris Dunleavy is put on trial by her husband, convicted of madness, and sent to Sanibel Asylum to be restored to a compliant Virginia plantation wife. But her husband is the true criminal; she is no lunatic, only guilty of disagreeing on notions of cruelty and property. On this remote Florida island, Iris meets a wonderful collection of inmates in various states of sanity, including Ambrose Weller, a Confederate soldier haunted by war, whose dark eyes beckon to her. Can love in such a place be real? Can they escape, and will the war have left any wayany placefor them to make a life together? "An absorbing story that explores both the rewards and perils of love, pride, and sanity."Publishers Weekly "With Blue Asylum, Hepinstall presents the reader with the rare and delicious quandary of whether to race through and find out what happens to her characters or to linger over her vivid, beautifully crafted sentences. For me, the only resolution was to read it twice." Hillary Jordan, author of Mudbound and When She Woke "A gripping story of love and madness in the midst of the Civil WarI couldnt put it down!"Kathleen Grissom, author of The Kitchen House

God forbid two adults have a conversation about what scents they prefer. Just say something! Btw this book is soooooo good. Beautiful prose. Interesting characters and a perfect setting (Civil War era asylum where men can have their wives locked away for any fabricated reason). Enjoying this one. But this character comes out with some wild ideas. Civil War era masculinity.

Mehso-so

A depressing story about a woman put into an asylum because she objected to her husband‘s treatment of slaves.

#friyayintro @jesshowbooks

1) mini-break from rehab, going home to snuggle kids and cats, but have to be back Sunday evening.
2) haven't read the book, but life feels like I'm in an asylum right now
3) London, UK
4) no room for a gorilla, so a sloth it is
5) it's overcast, so I guess it'll be around 23°C by midday

TrishB Enjoy the snuggles 💕 6y

There were parts of this book I really liked, but there were parts that felt too disjointed to me. Iris is placed in an asylum after her husband and the court declares her insane. It's 1860s America, so the Civil War is taking place, though the setting for the novel is an island off of Florida, pretty much removed from battles. Iris is strong willed, which I liked, though she makes some decisions without thinking of consequences. A so-so read.

Jinjer I love your quilt!!!! 7y

"His paper on the relationship of female lunacy and the suffrage movement in America..." This book is set in the 1860s in an asylum - this quote refers to the psychiatrist, and owner, of the establishment. I feel I'll be shaking my head quite a lot at the thoughts of characters in this novel.

Sace Ugh. 7y
DrexEdit Oh dear. I thought it was a non-fiction book from this excerpt. 7y
Librarybelle @DrexEdit It's an accurate thought of the 1860s (or that era for that matter). So, it's partially true. 😐 7y

I'm looking forward to the parade of #headlesscovers for #photoadaynov16 today! This book is about a woman who's sent to an asylum for daring to go against her slave owning husband. While there she meets an odd little boy and a Confederate veteran suffering from severe PTSD. Then stuff happens! Interesting discussion of "mental health" at the time, but the story itself is a little disappointing.

Zelma I've been on the fence with reading this book and your review was very helpful. Thanks! 👍 going to take a pass for better books. 7y
Susanita @Zelma I'm happy to help! 😀 7y
