All Souls | Javier Marķas
7 posts | 9 read | 10 to read
By one of the most important voices in contemporary world literature, a darkly comic novel about that most British of institutions, Oxford University. In All Souls, a visiting Spanish lecturer, viewing Oxford through a prismatic detachment, is alternately amused, puzzled, delighted, and disgusted by its vagaries of human vanity. A bit lonely, not always able to see his charming but very married mistress, he casts about for activity; he barely has to teach. Yet so much goes into simply "being" at Oxford: friendship, opinion-mongering, one-upmanship, finicky exchanges of favors, gossip, adultery, book-collecting, back-patting, backstabbing. Marķas demonstrates a sweet tooth for eccentricity in this sly campus novel and love story.

November 2 #HumbleHarvest All Souls Day I'm not one to celebrate this. I understand it's a Catholic celebration. To me, I remember the ones I lost with happy memories or something I do or see will remind me of them all year long. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

This was... fine. Maybe because I know oxford so well I found the descriptions of life there boring rather than exciting, it felt a bit like reading a prospectus rather than a novel at times which is a type of description I hate - if I‘m reading your novel for prose and characters and plot don‘t summarise the Wikipedia article of a university for 200 pages. Other than that there wasn‘t loads wrong with it just šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Liz_M But it does have a lovely cover! 4y
BarbaraBB Great cover indeed. I am never really enthusiastic about Marías. 4y
Emilymdxn @Liz_M indeed it does!! @BarbaraBB yeah I‘d heard he wasn‘t that good from a friend but I‘d already bought this one and thought I ought to give it a chance anyway. Glad that experienced is over haha 4y

The first package of my #bookhaul arrived today! I‘m struggling a little bit right now so I thought I‘d treat myself šŸ„° just as I was finally making progress on my physical tbr I realised HOW MANY books out there it was absolutely essential I have. If I hadn‘t bought these ones I‘d probably have collapsed. True story. Does this happen to anyone else??

Branwen YUP! I do the same thing! šŸ™ŠšŸ˜ 5y

An unnamed Spanish lecturer at Oxford (who is supposedly not the author) describes scenes and people from his two years there. And spends lots of time speculating about events in other peoples‘ lives. All in long stream-of-consciousness paragraphs. Not my kind of thing. #1001books read 195. #intranslation

Up next from the #1001books list. Since this is just over 200 pages, I hope I can finish this before my February group read holds come in! #intranslation

Liz_M I love his loopy, digressive writing. FYI, the main character is also the narrator of Your Face Tomorrow. 7y
