Stern Men: A Novel | Elizabeth Gilbert
12 posts | 14 read | 11 to read
The "wonderful first novel about life, love, and lobster fishing" (USA Today) from the #1 bestselling writer Look out for Elizabeth Gilberts new book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, on sale now! In 2000, Elizabeth Gilbert's Stern Men debuted to phenomenal critical attention. Now, Penguin is publishing a new edition of Gilbert's wise and charming novel for the millions of readers who devoured Eat, Pray, Love and remain hungry for more. Off the coast of Maine, Ruth Thomas is born into a feud fought for generations by two groups of local lobstermen over fishing rights for the waters that lie between their respective islands. At eighteen, she has returned from boarding school-smart as a whip, feisty, and irredeemably unromantic-determined to throw over her education and join the "stern men"working the lobster boats. Gilbert utterly captures the American spirit through an unforgettable heroine who is destined for greatness-and love-despite herself. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was the right book at the right time. On two islands off the coast of Maine the lobster fisherman are at war. The story unfolds through the eyes of Ruth sarcastic girl, who has grown up rough. The story is not mind blowing, but it‘s the characters that will stay with me. The widowed neighbor with her passel of boys, the tender bachelor set on creating a museum, etc. Reading this while exploring the coast made it all the more memorable.”

BkClubCare Hey! Tried to send a postcard and returned to me as “undeliverable” BUT! It was the address I have ?! See emails, pls advise 8mo
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Huzzah it came! I just got it. And I love the lilac postcard so much. That‘s my favorite flower! It immediately went into my copy of Tom Lake. 😍 8mo

I loved this one. The writing and the story both. It takes place off the coast of Rockland Maine, which is the next town over from me so I admit I had some bias since I've visited the islands it was based on. (The names were changed but I knew!) She got a lot of details right. This cover is stupid though and doesn't go with the story at all. A plain lobster boat would have been a better choice.

AmyG Thanks for posting this. I love her books and hd never heard of this. 5y

A beautiful story. I fell in love with these characters. Set in an island off the coast of Maine and all about the lobstering culture. A great book from @pageonebooks. See my review at https://youtu.be/wEzJXJmONB4

I‘m not going to lie, I just now noticed the lobster on the cover. It was only after I finished it. This was a cute, kind of weird book about a girl named Ruth and her growing up with a weird family life. Having been raised by the woman next door and a father who would never really talk with her. I‘m still unsure what I think of this book

I didn't love the writing all the time, and got a bit weary of all the swearing. I also don't really enjoy inscrutable main characters who don't seem to know themselves or their own motives at all. But all in all it was an enjoyable read and I was invested in the characters, and it ended very satisfactorily. Not bad at all for a debut novel.

In between Cutting for Stone, I started this Elizabeth Gilbert. Quite enjoyable so far, bit of a John Irving vibe. Interested to see where it goes.

This book went on my TBR pile years ago, after I read Elizabeth Gilbert's nonfiction books Eat Pray Love and Committed. I finally got around to this novel, and enjoyed it a lot. I found it charming and funny. The characters on the Maine islands were vivid and interesting. There were a couple of characters who were too one-dimensionally unpleasant, but I put that down to this being a young writer's first novel. #usareadingroadtrip #srcspring2017
