The Dream Songs: Poems | John Berryman
5 posts | 5 read | 2 reading | 5 to read
The complete Dream Songs-hypnotic, seductive, masterful-as thrilling to read now as they ever wereJohn Berryman's Dream Songs are perhaps the funniest, saddest, most intricately wrought cycle of poems by an American in the twentieth century. They are also, more simply, the vibrantly sketched adventures of a uniquely American antihero named Henry. Henry falls in and out of love, and is in and out of the hospital; he sings of joy and desire, and of beings at odds with the world. He is lustful; he is depressed. And while Henry is breaking down and cracking up and patching himself together again, Berryman is doing the same thing to the English language, crafting electric verses that defy grammar but resound with an intuitive truth: "if he had a hundred years," Henry despairs in "Dream Song 29," "& more, & weeping, sleepless, in all them time / Henry could not make good." This volume collects both 77 Dream Songs, which won Berryman the Pulitzer Prize in 1965, and their continuation, His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, which was awarded the National Book Award and the Bollingen Prize in 1969. The Dream Songs are witty and wild, an account of madness shot through with searing insight, winking word play, and moments of pure, soaring elation. This is a brilliantly sustained and profoundly moving performance that has not yet-and may never be-equaled.

So excited to say we have a #poetry shelf now! Admittedly pretty slim. I gave my husband The Dream Songs for Christmas as it's been referenced by The Hold Steady (& in Olive Kitteridge I think). Saw a fascinating film on Dylan Thomas so had to get the omnibus; and love Pablo Neruda. #riotgrams

ReadingEnvy It will grow! I used to have my classics and poetry on the same shelf but they each demand their own now. 7y
merelybookish I have a little collection of poetry too. And I love it! The best re-reading! 7y

This dude is the reason why every time someone says "I'm bored" I yell "ever to confess you're bored means you have no inner resources!" Also, "leaving behind: me, wag" #dogsoflitsy

And here's another #bookishbirthday - poet John Berryman! I first looked up his work after hearing the Hold Steady name drop him in "Stuck Between Stations." I am so impressed with how his poems balance tight construction and stream of consciousness. It's such fantastic stuff and worth committing to! (That Hold Steady album is ten this month...#old).

read_diverse_books I've never read any of his work. Will look a few of his poems up. Thanks for the recommendation! 8y
Abailliekaras How fantastic = Christmas present for my husband who's a huge hold steady (& Springsteen) fan. 👌 8y

Henry lay in de nerring, wild,
while the brainfever bird did scales;
Mr Heartbreak, the New Man,
come to farm a crazy land;
an image of the dead on the fingernail
of a newborn child.
