Mt. St. Helens is right there. You would never know it. If you zoom in, you can see all the wind turbines that moved in recently. They light up the hills at night. @ReaganT the live cam at Johnson's point is usually white with cloud cover, basically this sky up close.

This NF book by Patricia Lauber is an informational text about the formation Mount St. Helens through many years of eruptions and how it came to be active again in the 1980s. This book integrates reading and science and is a John Newberry medal winner! It provides many great photos and informational charts to go along with the lesson. This would be a great lesson for kids to create their own volcano!

mandarchy @ReaganT check out the MSH website live cam. Great on a clear day (unfortunately rare). Browse the site for informative videos that your students will love to see, it brings the story to life. Also look for the native telling of Loo Wit. And if that's not enough, I Survived has a Mt. This John Newbery Medal Award winning NF read discusses the true story events of not only volcanoes, yet the eruption and healing of Mount St. Helens; covering topics of the big blast, survivors and colonizers, links, and general volcano knowledge all connected with diagrams, visual aids, and real life pictures. A teaching strategy useful to this particular text would be LC.

AlexRobinson With text like this (and nonfiction in general) there is going to be a lot of want to collaborate and put information in a different format (such a visual aids, small group questioning, vocabulary researcher, etc) just because NF can get tricky to keep up with for some students as the information gets a bit intense. 3y

Loved this very informative, Newbery winning NF book by Patricia Lauber about the eruption and after effects of the Mount St. Helens mountain in Washington state. This book is packed with great information. The use of diagrams and photos that go along with specific information in the text provides great visuals that connect you to the text. Very clear table of contents in chronological order as well as a detailed index to refer to.

deiacovab PR is a good strategy to use as it is higher complexity and student comprehension would benefit from reading to each other to talk through difficult concepts. I chose ESOL Strategy 42: Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information. Students could work collaborate with their partner to complete a timeline while reading this book of important events like eruption dates. This strategy will also fulfill UDL.. 4y

DrSpalding Your images are beautiful. This would be an excellent book to use with your partner reading strategy in a science lesson about volcanoes. You must build a volcano with your students! Hands-on and educational. 4y

#Newbery I really enjoyed the pictures in this short Newbery Honor book. The book is an excellent nonfiction story for upper elementary students.
