Girl Who Drank the Moon | Kelly Barnhill
post image
Pickpick

This amazing fantasy novel by Kelly Barnhill is the winner of the John Newberry medal and is a New York Times best seller! It is a story about a witch who raises a baby that accidentally drank moonlight! She raises Luna and has to help her control her powers quickly! It has a lot of great characters including a tiny dragon. I think this book would be a great LC book and would be interesting to any student.

ReaganT This link provides many activities for the book but one I particularly like is the daily reading journal. It can be helpful to track students progress as well as help them retain the information they‘re reading. https://worksheets.edhelper.com/books/The_Girl_Who_Drank_the_Moon.htm 4y
ReaganT The activity uses UDL guideline 3.3- guide information processing and visualization. It also uses ESOL strategy 50- for content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities. 4y
ToddSalerno I didn‘t pick this for literature circles, but I‘m definitely interested in the fantasy element. I haven‘t yet come across this ad helper website, and it definitely has an immense number of resources. This could be a great starting point to create resources of ones own or utilize some free resources as is. 4y
DrSpalding I like the idea of a daily reading journal. This could be used to document topics the students would like to discuss during the literature circle/book club discussions. 4y

The Snowy Day | Ezra Jack Keats

Pickpick

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats is a RF book and a Caldecott Medal Winner. It is a book about a little boy waking up to snow in his neighborhood and exploring. He packs some snow in his pocket to use the next day but wakes up to find it gone! Luckily it had snowed even more that night. Sweet book and I love the illustrations! Good for young readers.

ReaganT http://homeschoolcreations.com/files/Snowy_Day_Printables.pdf This link provides over 20 worksheets and activities based on the book good for a kindergarten or 1st grade class. This activity uses UDL principle 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge. An ESOL strategy that can be used is 4. Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. 4y
KeanaE This is such an amazing book! I absolutely loved that you included this resource. Did you know that this author has an award named after him and this book. 4y

ReaganT @KeanaE actually I picked the Ezra Jack Keats award as my favorite on the google docs! I didn‘t actually notice that he was the author, it just didn‘t click😂 4y
ToddSalerno Even though this is RF, I could imagine this book utilized before a science lesson of states of matter (solid ice melting into liquid water). What a fun short picture book to kick off the lesson!! 4y
Sdemps This book cover offers beautiful imagery and I can see why this book has won a Caldecott award. The website that you provided is one that teachers could get great use out of. 4y
DrSpalding You are correct that this is a wonderful read aloud for young students. A few years ago we invited preschoolers from the creative school on campus to the teaching Academy. We read aloud this book and then provided them with fake snow for a science lesson! Helpful resource. 4y

Same, Same But Different | Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw

This RF book is probably one of my favs so far! It‘s a winner of the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award and is a cute story about two boys who are pen pals, one in India and one in the United States. They tell each other everything about their life and their world and how they are sort of the same, but different! Great story and I think it would be cool to do pen pals with our students!

ReaganT This link provides resources on how to get our students started with a pen pal! https://www.weareteachers.com/virtual-pen-pals/ I think this book goes well with ESOL strategy 24- incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum. Having pen pals also uses UDL principle 5.1- use multiple media for communication 4y
MFlowers I really like the activity you paired with this book! 4y
StephanyNunez I really like the incorporation of culture in this book and the Esol strategy is perfect for the book. 4y
DrSpalding Your resource is fantastic! During a social studies unit you could actually have virtual penpals with another country! Through the use of Google translate, students can interact with children all over the world. Universal design principle 5.1 is just right. Excellent post. 4y

This historical fiction by Gwendolyn Hooks comes with many others in the series by different authors. It goes through what life was like for young African American children during the civil rights movement. I like this book because it has vocabulary about the topic hilighted throughout the book as well as small boxes with facts about different objects or something the book talked about throughout the story. Very good pick for history instruction!

ReaganT Scholastic provides a civil rights game activity for grades 4-8. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/activities/teaching-content/civil-rights-mov... This book pairs well with UDL principle 3.2- Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. It also goes along with ESOL strategy 5- Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. 4y
StephanyNunez I like that the book provides vocabulary support for the student's and the integration of Social Studies. 4y
Sdemps Diverse books teach tolerance to young children. This story would also be an additional resource for a Social Studies lesson on the Civil Rights Movement. 4y
DrSpalding Categorizing this as historical fiction is not quite right because we know this is factual information. Your scholastic civil rights game activity is awesome! Use good books in the content areas. 4y

This NF book by Patricia Lauber is an informational text about the formation Mount St. Helens through many years of eruptions and how it came to be active again in the 1980s. This book integrates reading and science and is a John Newberry medal winner! It provides many great photos and informational charts to go along with the lesson. This would be a great lesson for kids to create their own volcano!

mandarchy @ReaganT check out the MSH website live cam. Great on a clear day (unfortunately rare). Browse the site for informative videos that your students will love to see, it brings the story to life. Also look for the native telling of Loo Wit. And if that's not enough, I Survived has a Mt. This book is a collection of poetry written by Shel Silverstein. (I did my author study on him) I love his writing style as well as his silly illustrations so this one was definitely fun for me to read through. It won the Booklist Editors award in 1996. This read aloud goes through the first part of the poems in the book and reads clearly. https://youtu.be/dy2MsP-aclw UDL principle- 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information.

ReaganT The read aloud also goes well with ESOL principle 38- assign short readings for homework. All of the poems are short and they could listen to just a few on the internet at home! 4y
DrSpalding All students at the elementary level should experience this poets work! English learner strategy 38 works perfectly. Use his website too! 4y

This RF book “David Jumps In” by Alan Woo and Katty Maurey is about the first day of school! ReaganT The activity is to draw the purple people in your life! This book can be taught using UDL principle 8.3 foster collaboration and community by having students talk about the purple people in their life. OliviaBuck This is a great book to show kids that families are all different in their own ways! Not all families consist of a mom and dad and siblings, which I feel is mostly represented, so it is awesome to see a book that goes against that representation. 4y
