The Polar Express | Chris Van Allsburg
post image
Mehso-so

This F picture book is about a boy who questions the existence of Santa Clause getting on a magical train called the Polar Express that takes him to the North Pole. This boy receives a very special gift from Santa himself. I would like to use this book for RA seasonally and possibly accompany it with the amazing movie that was made based on this book. UDL 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity would work well in teaching this book and

deiacovab other books about holidays celebrated in other cultures as well. I think this could open up some compare and contrast discussions. Having these discussions about “How do each of us celebrate our own holidays at home?“ can fit ESOL strategy 24. Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. The book is a Caldecott winning piece and the website for the book has some great resources to use in the classroom. 4y
DrSpalding This is fantasy at its best. Excellent job highlighting the award and connecting your English learner strategy along with your universal design principles. 4y

Strega Nona: Book & CD | Tomie DePaola
post image
Pickpick

In creating this post I discovered that Tomie DePaola has just passed away and the world of children's literature has taken a huge loss. This book is one I remember from my own elementary years and I plan to continue teaching Tomie DePaola's works in my future classrooms. Strega Nona is the first in the series of Strega Nona tales. This is a TL Caldecott winning picture book about an elderly woman named Strega Nona who uses her magic to help

deiacovab all the people in the town. Once she hires a man to help her around the house and he finds a way to use Strega Nona's powers to show off to the town. Unfortunately the man didn't follow all of the steps Strega Nona normally does and causes chaos. I would use this book for RA using this resource for the lesson https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/nicole-kent/bring-magic-your-clas... 4y
deiacovab There is a writing activity to help establish student comprehension in the resource where I would incorporate ESOL strat. 6. Continually monitor students‘ comprehension and UDL 5.2 use multiple tools for construction and composition. #ucflae3414sp20 4y
DrSpalding Your posts are thoughtful and encompass all necessary elements according to the rubric. We were so sad to hear of his passing. Continue to use his amazing books in your future classroom to honor his legacy. This one makes for a great read aloud as noted or would also be a fun storytelling. 4y

This is such a fun book to have in your classroom and holds a valuable lesson within it's pages. I would love to use this Caldecott Medal winning TL picture book for SR or S in my classroom. I love that this book brings folklore from a distant country and would be quite new for a lot of students; this could open up some great discussions in class. In this story, a mosquito whispers a rumor into an iguana's ear and chaos follows in the jungle.

deiacovab I would use ESOL strategy 14 Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant while sotrytelling. S offers an interesting way to teach a lesson so UDL Offer ways of customizing the display of information (1.1) is perfect for this story. I found a great resource for using folklore from other cultures in a lesson that this book would be perfect for http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/exploring-world-c... 4y
KatiaP Love the lesson plan you added! This is a great way to teach students about rumors! Would love to read it 4y
DrSpalding Your resource is of the highest quality! You do a lovely job elaborating on the appropriate English learner and universal design principles. 4y

This sweet F Caldecott winning picture book is about a kitten who sees the moon and thinks that it is a bowl of milk. She spends her evening chasing the great bowl of milk in the sky but cannot reach it. After she gets back home, she finds her very own bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch. This is cute story with simple writing and would be great for younger emergent readers with GR.

deiacovab I would use ESOL strategy 6 Continually monitor students‘ comprehension during GR and UDL principle 7.3 Minimize threats and distractions since I could read with the student 1 on 1. I found an incredible author study to use while teaching this author's books at https://www.kevinhenkes.com/wp-content/uploads/KevinHenkes_DigitalEducatorsGuide... #ucflae3414sp20 4y
DrSpalding Going straight to the author is the best choice when seeking resources to use in your classroom. This book would work well for guided reading or of course as a read aloud. 4y

This HF Coretta Scott King award winner is about a young girl who dreams of flying over her home in Harlem and looking upon her family and community below. Her favorite structure she flies over is the George Washington Bridge as it opened the day she was born. this book is based on an actual story quilt the author created. The theme of the book is cultural diversity and I would use this book for RA in my classroom.

deiacovab UDL principle 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information would be used for a lesson on this book. We can take a closer look at Faith Ringgold's story quilt and make our own in class. I would use ESOL strategy 11. Place language in meaningful context for this lesson also. I found an incredible video of the author doing a read aloud with this book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9RKJleFdBU 4y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful book! As soon as there are real settings noted, I always think geography and that I should expose my students to the location on a map. You could use Google earth! Excellent digital read aloud included. 4y

This P picture book contains assorted poems by the author accompanied by some unique 'stitched' illustrations. I would like to use this book for CR where students can practice reading poems they select to their peers or the teacher. I found a resource that shows how to have a “Poet of the Day“ during national poetry month (April) http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/april-nati...

deiacovab UDL 5.3 Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for
practice and performance is perfect for use with poetry in the classroom. I also think ESOL Strategy 16. Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities fits best with a CR activity for students. #ucflae3414sp20
4y
KarliCrean I will definitely be adding this book in my future classroom! Poems are so important for students to read because they will improve many reading skills for young children! 4y
DrSpalding Eloise greenfield is a fabulous children‘s poet. This anthology is one that should be in your classroom library. Choral reading works well with sharing poems. 4y

This TL picture book by Leo Lionni would be perfect for S (and I intend to do so!). This book tells the story of a chameleon that is bothered by the fact that he does not have his own color. The end of the story has moralistic value so I would consider it a fable. I would use ESOL strategy 17 Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, etc while storytelling with props.

deiacovab UDL 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information would also fit into storytelling. This is the website I found that I'm going to use for storytelling with this book http://www.linesacross.com/2011/08/chameleon-pipe-cleaner-animal-color-of.html/ #ucflae3414sp20 4y

This SF Newbery Award winning novel would be perfect for LC with the 8-12 age group. This book is about a widowed mouse who has to move her family to their summer living quarters immediately or they will die. One of her son's fell ill with pneumonia and cannot be moved. Mrs. Frisby goes to the rats that live on her farm for help because she was told that they have the capabilities to move her home to a safe area. The rats she meets are unlike any

deiacovab normal rats as they come from a place called NIMH. I found a novel study unit to use in conjunction with LC https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mrs-Frisby-and-the-Rats-of-NIMH-Nove... l would use UDL principle 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting to set goals during LC. ESOL strategy 13. Use preview/review activities would work for this novel when doing an author introduction before reading. #ucflae3414sp20 4y
deiacovab I loved the movie for this book growing up but I watched it again after reading the book and found that it‘s much different from the book and I wouldn‘t recommend it as much as the book. But personally I find the book to be an 8/10 :-) 4y
DrSpalding This is classic award-winning science fiction. We always want to say that the book is better than the movie! Using this book as an option for a literature circle is a good move. This F picture book is about acceptance and inclusivity. Gaston tells a story of a very prim and proper bulldog raised in a family of poodles and their meeting of tough poodle and her family of bulldogs. Something looked very wrong to the families but they learn the lesson that appearances are not what matters, love is. This would be a fun RA book because I see students being instantly drawn to the cute pup on the cover of the book.

deiacovab I would use UDL principle 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships when teaching this book to lead to a discussion of the general theme or idea of Gaston. I could use ESOL strategy 2 to promote cooperation when we discuss the books theme and what the real meaning of 'family' is. #ucflae3414sp20 (edited) 4y
deiacovab I found a very cute craft and compare/contrast activity here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Gaston-by-Kelly-DiPucchio-Comparing-... students can learn about opposites of words like “sip“ and “slobber“ walking with “grace“ and “race“. 4y

Martin's Big Words is a B children's picture book about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This book has won many awards including the Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honor Award. We take a walk through Martin's life in beautiful illustrations and learn about how Martin used his 'big' words to bring about change to the U.S and the world. This is a great book for a lesson on a peace and tolerance. I would use this piece of literature for RA.

deiacovab ESOL Strategy 20-List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard. I would use this for some of the big important words in the text before reading. UDL principle 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity is perfect for this text because of how important the content is. The author's website for this book contains teaching guides, study guides, and videos that can be used 4y

Mr Wuffles! | David Wiesner
post image
Mehso-so

Mr Wuffles! is an SF picture book written and illustrated by David Wiesner. It is a Caldecott honors book with very few words. Mr Wuffles! is about a cat who is very picky about his toys and ignores most of the ones his owner gets for him. One day, he finds the perfect toy that turns out to not be a cat toy at all. I would like to do an AS on David Wiesner and compare his literature. He would be a great study on SF books and wordless books as well

deiacovab I would use RA for this book and UDL 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization as students could brainstorm what is taking place on a certain page and about the 'alien language' we see in the text. This story gives students the opportunity to imagine what is taking place since the author is not outright stating what is happening. ESOL strategy 2 promote cooperation would be perfect when discussing this story during RA. 4y
deiacovab https://www.hmhbooks.com/wiesner/ is the author's website which has videos of the author talking about his creative process and his biography. There are book lists and also some interactive tools on his page as well. #ucflae3414sp20 (edited) 4y
ShardaeP It sounds like this would be a good book for students to make inferences and predictions. Students can focus on practicing reading strategies with this text. 4y
DrSpalding Awesome image! Most of his books are wordless. Going straight to the publisher and author website is a wise move. Your videos could help with an author study. (edited) 4y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image

This F Newbery award winning novel would be perfect for LC or IR. I cannot recommend this book enough and am so excited that there is going to be a movie of it coming out soon! The One and Only Ivan is a novel based on a real gorilla named Ivan who lived in a mall for almost 30 years of his life. This book is Ivan's story from his own point of view. Since the movie is coming out soon, UDL 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information is perfect.

deiacovab I chose ESOL strategy 45. Use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities because I thought a beneficial activity would be to compare Ivan's habitats to one another (the mall and the zoo) to show the importance of humans “making amends“ like Stella states in the book. https://www.harpercollins.com/9780061992254/the-one-and-only-ivan/ the publisher's website provides great resources for teachers like audio excerpts and teaching guides. 4y
ShardaeP I also loved this book. It made me emotional, because I don‘t like when animals are treated cruelly. On a lighter note, I love your drawing. I did something similar. The protesters were a powerful part of the story. (edited) 4y
Madison_swart I love your drawing it‘s such a powerful part in this story! This is an absolutely amazing that has such an amazing story 4y

SWADBOHH - is the shortest acronym for the longest titled HF picture book. This book has beautifully detailed painted illustrations and would be great for guided reading. I think the title could be very engaging to students and they'll end up learning about the Audubon Society (Conservation organization to protect birds) in the process. This book is a fictional story about the two very real women who founded the Audubon Society. #ucflae3414sp20

deiacovab It was really impossible to find decent resources for this book for some reason. It seems to be an obscure title so what I did was think about how to use this for guided reading and found a source instead for guided reading https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/17-18/what-is-guided-reading/. I think I would need to supply some background information for this book before reading so i chose UDL (3.1) Activate or supply background knowledge . 4y
deiacovab To assess EL student comprehension I would use ESOL strategy 4: Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge after reading the book to connect back to the background information I provided at the beginning of the lesson. 4y
DrSpalding Scholastic is always an excellent choice. The idea of using this for guided reading is a good one. Some local students go to the local Audubon Society on a field trip! This would be a great read prior to that visit. 4y

This TL Caldecott Honor picture book was my introduction to Leo Lionni. This book uses beautiful collage illustrations and teaches a meaningful lesson at the end. Alexander wants his life to be like Willy's until he sees that Willy is about to be thrown away...UDL principle 9.3 Develop self-assessment and reflection would be

Swimmy is a TL picture book about a little black fish named Swimmy who comes from a school of red fish. After a big tuna came and swallowed all of the red fish, Swimmy is alone in the big beautiful ocean, until he comes across another school of fish and teaches them a valuable lesson. Swimmy is a Caldecott Honor book and would be fun to use for S in the classroom. I chose UDL principle 8.3 about fostering collaboration and community sine that is..

deiacovab ..exactly what Swimmy does in the story. I also chose ESOL principle 24: Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. I found a Spanish version of this book and it would be interesting to compare with students key words in the English version to the Spanish version and allow EL students to work with other students on pronunciation. An example would be 'Nadarin' to 'Swimmy'. . #ucflae3414sp20 4y
deiacovab I found a resource that can be used for multiple Leo Lionni books https://images.randomhouse.com/promo_image/9780399555503_4216.pdf that discusses themes found in his books. Blended is about an eleven year old girl named Izzy (or Isabella if it is a 'Dad week') who loves to play piano and struggles with the displacement of having divorced parents. Something special about Blended is that it provides a windows and mirrors to topics like being biracial, racial injustice, and divorce. #ucflae3414sp20

deiacovab Students will be able to connect to this RF book and relate it to issues going on today. Blended is a New York Times Best Seller. ESOL strategy 2 Promote cooperation (small groups) would be perfect for this book especially in LC groups, students can discuss text to world connections. This MF-animal fantasy book follows a young child and the animals they meet on their adventure in the search for their own “tribe“. Loved this very informative, Newbery winning NF book by Patricia Lauber about the eruption and after effects of the Mount St. Helens mountain in Washington state. This book is packed with great information. The use of diagrams and photos that go along with specific information in the text provides great visuals that connect you to the text. Very clear table of contents in chronological order as well as a detailed index to refer to.

deiacovab PR is a good strategy to use as it is higher complexity and student comprehension would benefit from reading to each other to talk through difficult concepts. I chose ESOL Strategy 42: Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information. Grandpa Green is a beautiful RF picture book that won a Caldecott Honor Award in 2012. A young boy tells us the story of his great grandfather's long life; we go through grandfather's garden in the story and see his memories displayed as hedges trimmed into various topiaries. This book would do well as IR for emergent readers as it is a lower complexity book. RA is also a good option for this book.

deiacovab The publisher has a great guide for this and other Lane Smith books https://images.macmillan.com/folio-assets/teachers-guides/9781596436077TG.pdf. This guide would also be helpful for ESOL strategy 13 where teachers can do a 'preview' activity before reading. I chose UDL 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization; this can be conversations during RA asking what type of events we see in the topiary. 4y
amandar This book seems so sweet! Love how the reflection of memories is conveyed through topiary which is different. I agree with your choice of UDL 3.3, I think it fits perfectly for a book like this 4y

This F picture book is a fun addition to a classroom and is a Caldecott award winner! This book is great for teaching about predictions and differing points of view. Creepy Carrots is about a rabbit named Jasper who simply cannot stop eating carrots! Until they begin to follow him. deiacovab This book would be great for RA to utilize the think aloud strategies while reading. Students can discuss their predictions and possible changing opinions. You can use UDL principle 3.2 Highlighting Patterns, Critical Features, Big Ideas and relationships to form these predictions. EL strategies 1&3 can be used to increase comprehension and help with making predictions on the end of the book. (edited) 4y

SequoiaC123 Since you offered the idea of the students discussing their predictions with each other, I think it could also be a good idea for the students to write their own ending of the book!
