The Splendour Falls
The Splendour Falls | Susanna Kearsley
Praise for New York Times bestseller The Firebird: "Kearsley blends history, romance and a bit of the supernatural into a glittering, bewitching tale."Kirkus An Ancient Castle, a Tragic Love, and a Web of Secrets Begins to Unravel... Emily Braden has stopped believing in fairy tales and happy endings. When her fascinating but unreliable cousin Harry invites her on a holiday to explore the legendary own of Chinon, and promptly disappearswell, that's Harry for you. As Emily makes the acquaintance of Chinon and its people, she begins to uncover dark secrets beneath the charm. Legend has it that during a thirteenth-century siege of the castle that looms over the city, Queen Isabelle, child bride of King John, hid a "treasure of great price." And in the last days of the German occupation during World War II, another Isabelle living in Chinon, a girl whose love for an enemy soldier went tragically awry. As the dangers of the past become disastrously real, Emily is drawn ever more deeply into a labyrinth of mystery as twisted as the streets and tunnels of the ancient town itself. "A mix of intrigue and adventure...in a style similar to that of Mary Stewart or Barbara Erskine, Kearsley does an excellent job evoking the atmosphere of Chinon with its brooding castle."The Winnipeg Free Press "Kearsley's action-packed mystery-romance, set in a medieval French town, shows the same deft plotting that won Kearsley the Catherine Cookson prize for Mariana."Chatelaine

Another Kearsley book, as these are my easy comfort reads, and reading 10 minutes at a time while nursing requires easy book‘s to get into 😄🤱🏻👶🏼

This one was more like a current day mystery based on a historical past, similar to A Season of Storms. I enjoyed the relationships the character made, though I felt like her growth was forced and not fully worked through. Enjoyable story and memorable characters.

I actually started this book a while back, then set it aside, but I counted it amongst the unread when I recently inventoried my bookcase, so I'm ready to go ahead and finish it now, before I begin another series.

RadicalReader @EastWind76 hoping you love it here on Litsy. There are millions of books to discover which will surely make to be read piles surely skyrocket as well as making many friends to share the wonderful book filled discoveries with 6y
EastWind76 @RadicalReader I think this is the best social media ever! 😁 I'm trying so hard (my goal for 2019) to seriously reduce my TBR by reading the books I own but haven't read, but I keep seeing great books and adding them to my Thriftbooks wish list! 😂 6y

After Salvage the Bones, I needed something light to read. Susanna Kearsley is more escapist than literary, but I think her writing is wonderfully descriptive. You can tell a lot of research goes into the writing of each novel.

It pains me to say that this book was really boring. Kearsley is a beautiful writer, but this was about 90% description and pointless, uninteresting dialogue, and 10% thin plot. This was written in 1997, which I didn't realize until halfway through the book. It explains the lack of character communication (that a simple phone call would fix) and also demonstrates how much better Kearsley has gotten over the years.

Reading this bundle of fun. Light, mysterious, and lots of Chinon, France + a dead queen and vineyard and hot men= win for me tonight!
