Great book! Audio narrator was perfect, too.

ImperfectCJ Ooh! So glad you reviewed this one! I hadn't heard of it before, and it sounds great (and like something I might be able to listen to with my kids, unlike the Paul Tremblay I've been listening to). 1d
Crazeedi I've been meaning to read this one 1d
Heatherfeather @ImperfectCJ it's a true crime but, like, fun? No murder, just fascinating 24h

This might be my most disappointing book of 2019. I was looking forward to reading but I really really did not care for it. I think it was the execution. It reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing, where it started out as one thing and then turned into a boring courtroom drama. If you liked Garden Spells you might like this. I also felt like it lacked subtlety. Like I was being hit over the head with messaging and plot.

I can appreciate what the author was trying to do (write the ultimate in unreliable narrators in an over-the-top story) but it didn't quite work for me. It was missing, I don't know, a certain level of substance?

An exhaustive and rich account of human tragedy. Cults fascinate me. (As an aside, I found a great number of similarities between the Peoples Temple and Scientology)

britt_brooke LOVED this book. Jeff Guinn is fantastic. I‘m a cult fanatic, too. And I definitely agree that Scientology fits the bill. Have you read Zealot by Jo Thornely yet? She covers a few of the most well-known cults around the world, but is very snarky and funny, too. It‘s great on audio. 3w
Heatherfeather @britt_brooke I have not but now I TOTALLY WILL. and yay another cult fanatic (hahahaha that sounds weird) 3w
britt_brooke @Heatherfeather 🤣 We are fascinated, but we don‘t want to join so it‘s okay, I think. 🤣🤞🏻 Jo Thornely also has a podcast but I didn‘t find out about it until after I read her book. 3w

It's official. Atkinson is one of my favorite writers. This has a totally different voice than Life After Life, and I want to read them all. Although...I think I might *read* the other Jackson Brodies bc the narrator was slightly annoying.

Ok...so this was another extremely important book. So difficult to listen to (although it IS funny at times) but necessary. The last essay, about the troll who impersonated her dead dad, I'd heard before, and it was no less powerful the second time.

Now I need a really fictiony escapist novel to give myself a break from Important Books. 🙂

I was underwhelmed. I think it's because I feel like the "shocker" was that the story was told in reverse, and not the actual story itself (which was also slightly confusing?).

Echhhhh this reading slump. So I think this was a victim of "just not right for me but probably really perfect for someone else." Pros: the writing, the apple tree concept. Cons: the unoriginal story, the Emma "plotline", the fact it was unchallenging and watered down

Putting this one down at 157 pages. It's dry. It's boring. It's a list of facts and the facts aren't all that interesting. Unfortunately.

Probably an #unpopularopinion, but I just didn't enjoy this for the most part, and I'm super bummed about it! I think it's because I listened to the audiobook and I found the narrative scattered and frenetic and eventually tiresome. I will watch the TV show though.

I sincerely wish this had been written better. It is an utterly fascinating, crazy/incredible story. I listened to the audiobook, and while the author is an elderly gentleman and not an actor, I very much appreciated him narrating his own story. However, the pace was uneven. PS I found his observations in the epilogue spot on. 😁 now I need to watch the movie because I need to know how Spike Lee interpreted this!
