Golden State
Golden State: A Novel | Stephanie Kegan
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
A riveting new novel (Kirkus Reviews) about finding evil close to home and how far a woman will go to protect her family: Named one of The Top 10 Things We Love This Week by Entertainment Weekly. Growing up in the 1960s in one of Californias most prominent political families, Natalie Askedahl worshipped her big brother, Bobby, a sensitive math prodigy who served as her protector and confidante. But after Bobby left home at sixteen on a Princeton scholarship, something changed between them. Now that Natalie has a career and a family of her own, her only real regret is losing Bobby. Then, a bomb explodes in the middle of her seemingly ideal life. Her oldest daughter is on the Stanford campus when one person is killed and another maimed. Other attacks follow across California. Frightened for her family, Natalie grows obsessed with the case of the so-called Cal Bomber, until she makes an unthinkable discovery: the bombers manifesto reads alarmingly like the last letter she has from Bobby. Unsure of whom to sacrifice and whom to protect, Natalie is confronted with a terrible choice. As her life splits irrevocably into before and after, she begins to learn that some of the most dangerous things in the world are the stories we tell ourselves. An intense, provocative novel...Golden State will resonate with anyone whos ever watched a loved one self-destruct (People). As Los Angeles Magazine said about author Stephanie Kegan: Youve got our attention.

#RedRoseSeptember #catchup

I thought of this book That I read a few years ago for this prompt. The MC suspects that her estranged older brother may be the “Cal Bomber” (a domestic terrorist responsible for bombs planted at Stanford & other places) when the bomber‘s manifesto sounds like a letter she received from him. She can‘t say #HeAintHeavyHesMyBrother

Cinfhen I own this book but haven‘t gotten to it yet 🙄 #SoManyBooksSoLittleTime 5y

#90sinJuly #CaliforniaLove From Sacramento to San Francisco to SoCal and places in between, these are nine books I've read that are set in California. I know there are many more on my shelves but these are the ones that came to mind first. 📚🌞💚

Robothugs Nicely done! 7y
Cinfhen Good for you! Your memory is still sharp📌I can't remember what I read last week😝 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I have a good memory for books, movies, random trivia & things like that but I can park my car for 20 minutes and have no idea where it is! 😆🤔😜 7y

ValerieAndBooks Which one is the Sacramento one? I grew up in the area. 7y
DebinHawaii @ValerieAndBooks Furious is the first book in a mystery/thriller trilogy and It and the author's other series are set in Sacramento. Also The Jane Austen Bookclub is set in Davis. 👍 7y
ValerieAndBooks Good to know about Furious although it's not really a genre I read regularly. I read Jane Austen Bookclub many years ago and was surprised to find it set in Davis -- hubby and I attended school there and first two years of marriage there also 😊 7y
DebinHawaii @ValerieAndBooks That's cool. It's fun to read book set where you know. 😀👍 Furious & both series by that author lean to the darker side, so if it's not your genre already they may not be ones you'll like. 7y

Pickpick

This book looks at what happens when a beloved family member becomes a domestic terrorist. With interesting explorations of mental illness and how family dynamics affect people as adults, this book was definitely hard to put down. The main character did irritate me with her bad judgement and selfish decisions, but overall this book is a pick.
