Edge of Nowhere
Edge of Nowhere | C.H. Armstrong
4 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Despised and feared by her sprawling family, Victoria Hastings Harrison Greene refuses to go quietly from her long life without revealing the secrets she's held locked away for more than fifty yearsthe same secrets consistent with the rumors her grandchildren whisper behind her back during family gatherings.Widowed with nine children during the one-two punch of The Great Depression and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, Victoria made harsh choicesdesperate choices that reduced a once soft and loving young woman into the reviled matriarch she is today. Hers is the story of one womans courage in the midst of overwhelming adversity, and her absolute conviction to never stop fighting...no matter what it takes.

Pickpick

If you‘re interested in historical fiction about life during the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, this is a good book for you. These years (1930s-early 40s) were punishing and poverty-stricken, and that makes this woman‘s life depressing. Plus, she makes some understandable but devastating choices. Well written, slow start, but grabbed me by the heart as it progressed.

Time for a #bookreport. I‘ve been audiopuzzling and getting a lot read that way. But I‘m balancing tooooo many books right now. Thankfully, I‘m nearly done with “Drive Your Plow ...”

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Lots and lots going on!!! Are most of these audios??? Do U listen via library system too or just Audible?? How‘s Drive your plow?? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen The square ones have all been audio. Plus also the Rankin. I‘ve got 100s (no exaggeration) of unheard audios in my Audible library. Plus I use Scribd! Not so much the library b/c I‘m impatient. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Drive your Plow ... def an #eccentricMC and a unique writing style. It‘s odd ... trying to gather my thoughts for the review! 5y

Mehso-so

This was loosely based on the author‘s grandmother‘s life of surviving during the hardships of 1930s Oklahoma (economy, Dust Bowl, etc.). And while I do not doubt the absolute despair of that time and place, I felt that the never ending atrocities that befell the character of Victoria were too overblown and a bit unbalanced. There‘s suicide, stillbirths, deaths by both ruptured appendix and poisonous snakes, spousal abuse, extortion for sex, ⬇️

robinb ...murder, and I‘ll stop there because I‘m exhausted. 😩 This ended up being between a so-so and a Pan for me. 3/5⭐️ #NetGalley #CentralAvenuePublishing 6y
mabell My goodness that sounds exhausting 😳 6y
Smrloomis 😳 I definitely couldn‘t keep going with all that 🙄 6y
Freespirit It does sound grim😁 6y
robinb @mabell @Smrloomis @Freespirit And I probably left some things out...it was simply too much negativity thrown at me in a 270 page book. 😩😳🤪 6y

Up next, #coverlove. But it‘s already a pretty emotional read, and I‘m only 10% in. 😔
