The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone | Brian Merchant
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
The secret history of the invention that changed everything-and became the most profitable product in the world. NATIONAL BESTSELLERShortlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award One of the Best Business Books of 2016 - CNBC, Bloomberg, 1-800-CEO-Read "The One Device is a tour de force, with a fast-paced edge and heaps of analytical insight." -Ashlee Vance, New York Times bestselling author of Elon Musk "A stunning book. You will never look at your iPhone the same way again." -Dan Lyons, New York Times bestselling author of Disrupted Odds are that as you read this, an iPhone is within reach. But before Steve Jobs introduced us to "the one device," as he called it, a cell phone was merely what you used to make calls on the go. How did the iPhone transform our world and turn Apple into the most valuable company ever? Veteran technology journalist Brian Merchant reveals the inside story you won't hear from Cupertino-based on his exclusive interviews with the engineers, inventors, and developers who guided every stage of the iPhone's creation. This deep dive takes you from inside One Infinite Loop to 19th century France to WWII America, from the driest place on earth to a Kenyan pit of toxic e-waste, and even deep inside Shenzhen's notorious "suicide factories." It's a firsthand look at how the cutting-edge tech that makes the world work-touch screens, motion trackers, and even AI-made their way into our pockets. The One Device is a roadmap for design and engineering genius, an anthropology of the modern age, and an unprecedented view into one of the most secretive companies in history. This is the untold account, ten years in the making, of the device that changed everything.

3 of 5 of my top battery pulling apps are book related, one is getting a lot of use for NaNo prep, and the other has been used for music lately.

Just realized I can‘t take a picture of “my one device” with my one device. Hmmm. This book about the invention and production of the iPhone is written with humor and touches on the changes in the world that came with it. A picture of Ethel instead😺

My brand new, first ever mobile phone, not yet set up, but a good photo prop for my review of this fascinating micro-history about the iPhone. Technology anthropology, well-researched, making it clear that the device was not created by one man at Apple, but built on ideas & materials from around the world, through "collaborative incremental work, fledgling start-ups & massive public research institutes." #audiobook narrated by Tristan Morris.

DivineDiana Congratulations! My husband still resists! 😳 7y
Lindy @DivineDiana Thanks. I'm not totally keen on switching from an iPod, but I have accepted it will be useful sometimes to have a phone. 7y
AlaMich Once you've had it for awhile you'll wonder how you lived without it. 😊 7y

melbeautyandbooks @lindy You have never had any type of cell phone before? Or is this your first smartphone? 7y
LauraBeth Yay! You got one! 7y
DivineDiana @Lindy Indeed! 📞 7y

batsy That's great 🎉 Were you using a tablet or an iPad for Litsy before this? 7y
Lindy @melbeautyandbooks Yup, my very first portable phone. 7y
Lindy @LauraBeth @DivineDiana @LeahBergen Thanks for the enthusiasm! 😊 7y
Lindy @batsy I have been using an iPod touch. My sisters assured me that I could do everything on my new phone that I used to do on my iPod. I will get Litsy set up on the new device tomorrow. 7y
Dragon Congratulations on your new phone! My iPhone was my first smartphone, I've had it for just over 2 years and I don't know how I lived without it. Enjoy! 👍🐉 7y
rabbitprincess Oh yeah, if you've been using an iPod you should adjust to the iPhone very easily. You can always put it in Airplane Mode if you don't want people to be calling you all the time on it 😉 7y
batsy @Lindy That's pretty cool that the iPod touch had multiple capabilities, I wasn't aware. Good luck settling in with your iPhone, I think you'll enjoy it :) 7y
Lindy @Dragon Thanks! 7y
Lindy @rabbitprincess I went with a small monthly data package, so I've put it in airplane mode so that I can download apps and use the Internet via wifi. I didn't think about anyone who might try to phone me... when I get around to letting them know that I have a new number. 7y
Lindy @batsy Thanks. My iPod has travelled the world with me, providing camera, maps, audiobooks, podcasts, email & Internet access, Litsy & more. 7y

I will soon purchase my very first mobile phone (still in the research stage; Litten advice is welcome) so this audiobook has particular relevance to me now.

TrishB I'm rubbish at phones my kids pick mine!! 7y
Lindy @TrishB Two of my sisters have a lot of tech expertise, so I am feeling pretty confident about the device. It's the phone plan maze that has me bewildered. 7y
TrishB Good luck 👍 I normally say the maximum I'm prepared to pay! 7y
Lindy @TrishB Thanks! 7y

I really enjoyed how he story of the making of the first iPhone is interweaved with the details of where parts and materials are sourced from and with details of the manufacturing process. Highly recommended, particularly if you're an Apple nerd.
