When We Were Animals
When We Were Animals | Joshua Gaylord
Nobody knew why, but when the boys and girls reached a certain age the parents locked themselves up in their houses, and the teenagers ran wild... Lumen Fowler knows she is different. While the rest of her peers are falling beneath the sway of her communitys darkest rite of passage, she resists. For Lumen has a secret. Her mother never breached and she knows she wont either. But as she investigates her towns strange traditions and unearths stories from her familys past, she soon realises she may not know herself or her wild side at all...

I liked it. The book is about people getting in touch with their feral id, particularly teenagers when the moon is full. The book is smart and contemplative as well as interesting, although I felt that the ending was incomplete and left me with some unanswered questions. Maybe it was supposed to.

My favorite under the radar book is When We We‘re Animals. A magical, gothic coming of age novel. I could reread this a million times. 🐺 🌙 ✨ #24in48 #undertheradar

One of my favorite books the year it came out. The teenagers of this town "breech" during full moons of their teenage years. The wildly cavort and follow their basest instincts. Told in retrospect from a woman who escaped the town, it's a great horrorish novel. #walkingonthemoon #rockinmay

Cinfhen Sounds terrifying but still fun 😳 7y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was a bit scary, but not so much horror that I couldn't stomach it. (I'm a wimp when it comes to that genre.) 7y
Cinfhen I'm a total 🐓💩 7y
Erinreadsthebooks This author must've lived with teens or worked in a high school because the full moon definitely has an effect on them. 😂 7y
Megabooks @Erinstutts really? Interesting. 7y

Mehso-so

I don't completely know what to think about this one. In some respects I feel the story is hackneyed, with tired symbolism and unnecessary dualism, but on the other hand, the language used is beautiful and the story is highly original. In any case, a page-turner.

My favorite book store in Texas is also its largest. Austin's BookPeople has everything. #getindie #austin

Gottabook Totally agree! ? Wish I lived closer, but thank goodness they have a great online presence for me to "browse" their shelves! 8y

This is my #recommendsday pick. I read this about a year ago and it really stuck with me. A beautiful coming of age story with a hint of werewolf even though it's not a werewolf story. The writing is poetic and magical. I loved it. 🌑✨

A tale about the the dark and wild days of youth, with twisting werewolf mythology and eerie thoughts about how you change when you become an adult. This book is still haunting me!

Elisa Sounds interesting! 8y
