Winner of the Viareggio Prize, a vivid portrait of Italy on the brink of social upheaval in the 1970s. Inside an apartment building on the outskirts of Milan, the working-class residents gossip, quarrel, and conspire against each other. Viewed through the eyes of Chino, an impressionable thirteen-year-old boy whose mother is the doorwoman of the building, the world contained within these walls is tiny, hypocritical, and mean-spirited: a constant struggle. Chino finds escape in reading. One day, a new resident, Amelia Lynd, moves in and quickly becomes an unlikely companion and a formative influence on Chino. Ms. Lyndan elderly, erudite British womancomes to nurture his taste in literature, introduces him to the life of the mind, and offers a counterpoint to the only version of reality that hes known. On one level, Lost Words is an engrossing coming-of-age tale set in the seventies, when Italy was going through tumultuous social changes, and on another, it is a powerful meditation on language, literature, and culture.

Congrats @Linsy on 1,000!! 🎉🎉
Thanks for doing the giveaway! #linsyloveslitsy

My favorite word is tchotchke! Its yiddish but it replaced an obsolete word in polish. my grandma was polish and this is one of the first polish words i learned! Just saying it makes you giggle. It refers to a knick knack that has no function. My family still uses this word allll the time! Its funny!

AmyG Hahaha. I am Jewish, so we always “pepper” our conversations with yiddish. 👍🏻 6y
Molly_the_mezzo Great word! My mother uses it all the time, and it‘s one of my favorites. 6y
bookish_wookish Some words just sound better in yiddish!!! @AmyG 6y

The word appears to have originated in the southern US. The earliest written record comes from an 1829 issue of The Virginia Literary Magazine in its glossary of Americanisms. The magazine states that hornswoggle came from KY, its oddness matches nicely w/ other 19th-century Americanisms, such as sockdolager, absquatulate, callithump, slumgullion, & skedaddle. It joins bamboozle and honeyfuggle as colorful ways to say "to deceive." #WordOfTheWeek

TaylorMay So I decided to start a #WordOfTheWeek post. Why? Because we all have a love of words so why not? This one is from the word of the day on the Merriam-Webster dictionary website. I'm going to try and make sure to use it this week. Anyone want to join me in this adventure? 6y
Dolly Good for you! I think you will get some strange looks😂. I‘m old and have heard a few of these words used but most sound odd. 🤔 6y
TaylorMay @dolly thanks! The only one I had heard before was skedaddle. And I do use it! I feel like I want to use it at work if one of my employees is trying to mess with me. 😂 they may look at me like I've lost my mind though lol 6y
