Reader's Block | David Markson
post image

I'm having some pretty major reader's block due to brain fog and general blahs - can anyone give me a recommendation to get me out of my slump? I've been reading a lot of meta-fiction lately, like Grady Hendrix and Seanan McGuire, but I'm up for anything so long as it isn't overly realistic. Don't mind depressing so long as it's in a sf/f context, but some humor might be nice too. Free kitty picture as my tax.

Molly_the_mezzo I have access to Overdrive, Hoopla, and Kindle Unlimited, btw. My current book budget is limited but not non-existent, so I can purchase something, but preferably not like a 15 book series at $20 each or anything like that. 2y
TEArificbooks When I get into a reading slump I try to read a genre I haven‘t read in a while. I also will read a Harlequin since they make good palette cleansers. They are light easy reads with happy endings. Or I will read a narrative nonfiction since they read like fiction and I learn something. Therefore I feel productive. 2y
TEArificbooks If I feel like laughing I go with the Stephanie Plum series. 2y
See All 8 Comments
Molly_the_mezzo Stephanie Plum is a great thought! I usually read a lot of cozies and I've been avoiding them because I'm supposed to be working on mine and I have been heavily neglecting it for like three weeks (lol?) but that has a vaguely similar tone without as much likelihood to remind me of my negligence! 2y
KathyWheeler Something with short chapters always works for me. I used to read Robert Parker‘s Spenser series for this because of that and because they aren‘t too dense. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading How about a psalm for the wild built by Becky Chambers? It‘s short and sweet. You could probably get through it in one sitting. 2y
melissanorr More paranormal than SF but incredibly funny: Honey Badger Chronicles by Shelly Laurenston. 2y

My ever-increasing ill health has me going through a lot more audiobooks (vs print) compared to what I used to. What can people tell me about audible vs scribd vs chirp or wherever you get your audiobooks from? The six a month I can get from hoopla is just not cutting it! Thanks all!

Bookwormjillk Does your library have Libby? I get a ton of audiobooks from there. 3y
melissajayne I get mine through Libby 3y
TrishB @Cinfhen and @Megabooks are queens of audio! I‘m sure they have some thought. 3y
See All 18 Comments
Megabooks Definitely agree with @Bookwormjillk about Libby! I do not like scribd, but it has worked really well for @Cinfhen . Audible is really affordable if you‘re looking to buy at least a couple of books a month and want access to more sale titles than Chirp has. Audible also has the Plus Catalog that has included books and podcasts to borrow. Chirp works if you don‘t want to be tied to a membership and get a similar discount audible on regular titles. (edited) 3y
Ruthiella Libro.fm is also a good source and supports local bookstores, if you want to avoid Amazon and the price is the same I think. 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella makes a good point. I do have a Libro.fm subscription in addition to my audible one. It is $4 more per credit than audible, but I‘m glad to support independent bookstores with some of my money. (I don‘t have a local one.) A note: Libro.fm and audible with membership and chirp for everyone offer “30% off list price,” so you think it would be the same wherever you buy. It‘s not. Since I read so much audio, I always check all three if... 3y
Megabooks I‘m going to buy a title at their list price because even with 30% off it can vary by up to $3 between services, and there is no consistency as to who is cheaper. I know this is a lot to take in. I‘ve read 122 audiobooks so far this year. 52 through Libby, 51 through audible, 8 through Libro.fm (which I just joined in December), and the rest through chirp and hoopla. Please feel free to ask any questions you have! 3y
sblbooks I use OverDrive through my library. It's great because it's free, and there are lots of books to choose from. 3y
Twainy Hoopla, OverDrive, Libby, NetGalley - FREE. I supplement with Audible. I pay Audible $149 a year for 12 credits. That gets me 12 books, any book, anytime. They also have the Audible + Catalog which is free audiobooks if you are a member, I‘ve listened to 3 so far they are good books. They have a daily deal email (book for ~ $0.99 - $5). Lots of sales! $30 gift cards for 3 credits & discounts on 3 credits if you run out. Purchased books are yours! (edited) 3y
Twainy I just bought 4 books on the Audible $6 sale. I do this about 4X a year. I buy books that are over 20 hours & favorite authors/series. I recently bought Dolly Parton Storyteller as a daily deal for $3.I have 2 “Plus” books downloaded. Also when I changed from monthly $14.99 to yearly my first year was $99. Look for a deal or call them. I also buy most of the actual books that I love on Amazon, at B&N & BookOutlet. 3y
RenePenn I also use overdrive app for free library books. They usually have pretty good availability and I put the more popular ones on the hold list to be notified when they become available. Works out pretty good. 3y
Cinfhen You‘ve gotten loads of good advice! I can add that my #Scribd subscription has worked well for me as I‘m able to borrow 2 new releases a month (sometimes more as it depends on publisher‘s licensing rights and also where you live) and then they offer “unlimited” borrows on older audios which I sometimes borrow another 3 or 4 depending on what‘s available. The service is $6.99 a month. Originally I found an offer for first 3 months free 👇🏽 3y
Cinfhen I may have a code if you‘re interested in trying scribd for free. Libro.FM also has a free trial offer. I found they were consistently more expensive on their deals than Audible, which I LOVE and I think their deals and overall service is the best. They have excellent customer service. @britt_brooke listens to lots of audios too! I think she uses Audible & her local library. If you ever want recommendations @Megabooks is the prime source 💗 3y
Molly_the_mezzo @Bookwormjillk @melissajayne @Megabooks @sblbooks @RenePenn Yes, sorry, I do use libby as well as hoopla but they do not seem to have many books I am interested in on audio. I mostly prefer sci-fi/fantasy and they don't have much in that genre 3y
Molly_the_mezzo @Megabooks Wow, that seems like more hours than there have been! I think you're magic! 3y
Megabooks @Molly_the_mezzo thank you! My recommendation for sci fi/fantasy would be a one or two audible credit subscription. Search their plus catalog for included books and you‘ll also be in on their sales and daily deals, which usually include multiple genres. Also sign up for the chirp emails through bookbub. They usually have about 20 or so books on sale from 1.99 to 4.99 that are rotated in and out every couple of weeks. I usually go through the ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks List once a week to make sure I‘m not missing anything good. I don‘t read much genre fiction, so I can‘t help with individual titles, but I think that may be the best plan for you if you think you‘ll listen to 2-3 or more books a month than your library provides. Good luck! 3y
Tera66 Audible has a bunch of "included" books. So along with your one credit a month, they have tons of freebies for about $16 a month. And that stinks you only get 6 a month from Hoopla, in Colorado we get 10, but we get no audio books from Libby, do you get libby? Maybe another source? 3y

Hello, fellow Littens! This post is intended to gauge if there would be any interest in a #bookclub that focused on cozy mysteries! This is inspired both by my deep love of the genre and the fact that I am hard at work writing my first cozy, and would find it really helpful to figure out which aspects of other cozies people do or don't like. Let me know if you might be interested!

BookishMarginalia I love #cozymystery! I‘m not a very disciplined book club member though... 3y
Bookwormjillk What did you have in mind? A buddy read? I am interested. 3y

Molly_the_mezzo @Bookwormjillk Probably a buddy read, yeah, I had not gotten past the very initial thought yet, so if you have any suggestions on mechanics, I'd be very glad to hear them! 3y
Molly_the_mezzo @BookishMarginalia I certainly will not be requiring discipline or that people *have* to read every book! Participate only if and when you want to! 3y
Molly_the_mezzo @MallenNC I love them too! I'll let you know if/when I figure out exactly what I'm doing! 3y

Read more like a thriller, in a good way. The viewpoint changes between five different characters who have just received their "Match", a person genetically determined soulmate. While the chapters are short, the suspense of each story drives you to keep reading on. Every single chapter past the first few comes with a major or minor twist of some sort, which I enjoyed. 4.5/5

For anyone with a resolution, I wanted to recommend this app I use, Habitica. It basically uses CBT principles packaged as a text-based rpg. You can set a task (say, finish a book) and it gives you rewards to spend on in-game upgrades, or rewards you set up for yourself (a coffee from Starbucks, a bubble bath, etc) Anyway, I thought it might be helpful!

This is the kind of thing that drives me up the wall! Why does Libby have only book three of a five book series? What am I meant to do with this? 😂 I swear that like, at least 90% of series that I look at don't have all the books in a series and a truly surprising amount that don't have the first book, so then how am I supposed to even start? 🤦

SeaToSkyes It has to do with the licensing rights your individual library has; that's why I have multiple library cards! 😉 3y
Molly_the_mezzo Oh yeah, I know, and I don't blame anyone, it is just SO annoying! 3y
SeaToSkyes It is, just like how libraries will weed books in a series only to end up repurchasing them later on 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
See All 12 Comments
LibrarianRyan @SeaToSkyes @Molly_the_mezzo McMillan publishers who‘s imprint Tor publishes this series. Their ebooks to libraries are metered. You only get so many checkouts before you have to buy a new copy. It‘s usually 52 but sometimes less. Some metering like scholastic is done by time span. PRH let‘s libraries choose whole own (at a crazy price) of metered, but that can depend on the platform used. It needs more regulation. 👇🏻 3y
LibrarianRyan I thought the price fixing s candle years ago would take care of this, and it did for the public but not for libraries. 3y
Molly_the_mezzo @LibrarianRyan Thanks, that's helpful information to have! But actually, I already own hard copies of the first three of this series, so it was more general whining.😂 I dislike being inconvenienced, and am a giant baby! 3y
LibrarianRyan @Molly_the_mezzo oh I get it. The rants I can go on about library ebooks. Mainly as the person 2ho has to pay for them. 😜 3y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan It is infuriating. A faculty member requested that I buy an ebook on her area. The print copy was $25.00; the ebook was $700. She was completely shocked and decided they didn‘t need it. To me, this is unconscionable and is price gouging. 3y
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler oh yeah. There have been a few bills to set regulations for ebooks for libraries, but they never make it out of committee. For my library if you can‘t get it in print they want you to purchase an entire database instead of one book. It‘s crazy 3y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan I‘ve had to explain that to faculty before — that I can‘t justify $30,000 or more for a database just for one book. They always look at me with shock that I can‘t just buy the one ebook. 3y
SeaToSkyes Oh my gosh, I had no idea that ebooks were so much more expensive! I work in a library, but don't really deal with purchasing. I was able to upgrade our adult graphic novels for a school project this year, however, so I did get a glimpse into collection development. 3y
Molly_the_mezzo Just to clarify, I did mean that I was annoyed at the universe for being unaccomodating to my whims, definitely not at librarians! Librarians do impossible jobs and are grossly underpaid for it. I just would prefer that everything in my life work smoothly with no effort on my part, is that so much to ask? 😋 3y

Of course, since I chose not to read this until now, I was unable to avoid spoilers and knew the twist, but it was still interesting looking at the psychology of the characters. Thrillers are always a good choice for the hospital, as they keep your interest but aren‘t too deep for the most part.

Continuing my post-hospital catch-up. Like the other one in this series I reviewed, I felt that the author‘s lack of real baking knowledge made Hannah‘s character unbelievable. She tries to pepper the book with baking facts and recipes but they are at best rudimentary and at worst downright incorrect.

I was in the hospital for about two weeks without my phone, but I did have books, so I‘m going to put out my reviews over the next few days spaced out a bit, every few hours. Gastroparesis is a bitch, man. That said: I though Cream Puff Murder was a fairly nice cozy, but the recipes were atrocious and the ending came out of left field. There is no world in which this character is a professional baker.

As of the end of breakfast, this is where I stand. Clearly not doing 24 hours, but hoping for 12. That wouldn‘t be bad, with so many interruptions! #24in48

Mollyanna You‘re doing fabulous! Hope you are feeling a bit better too. 5y
Time_Wanderer I‘m aiming for 12 hours as well... you‘re doing great! 5y

I‘m really bad at picking favorites, but I‘m working on a ya book right now, so I‘m going with that one! It‘s slow-going because I‘m listening instead of reading, so a book that might take me two hours is taking me ten. #24in48

The above is the first romance novel I‘d read in quite a while. As for how my love life is going, I chose not to schedule a first date for today because of #24in48
I ended up being in the hospital anyway, but that‘s where my head is at. Hahahahaha

24in48 So sorry you've been in the hospital! 5y

DebinHawaii I really liked this one too! I just saw your posts about being in the hospital. Hope you are OK and feeling better soon. Take care! 💜 5y

I‘ve switched to an audiobook, having caved to my pounding head. Due to headache, dilaudid, and Benadryl, I‘ve only done about 2 hours and 15 minutes so far. #24in48

Hour twelve challenge:
I actually just did audiobooks for the first time ever in the last couple weeks due to a crazy migraine. I‘m enjoying them, but I still prefer print. #24in48

Sweettartlaura Charmaine Harris‘s books are GREAT choices for audiobooks. I read these ones in print. But once I started listening to the first Aurora Teagarden Book, I‘ve only listened to her books since. They‘re so cozy - it‘s like a friend is just telling you a story over a cup of coffee & a slice of pie 🙂 5y

I brought a bunch of books with me to the hospital in case I get the gumption to do #24in48
I doubt I‘ll do the full 24, and I certainly won‘t finish my books, but I might as well try!

1. It‘s so hot out that it made me think of this one Dehydration, people!
2. Cheetos may literally be my favorite food and I love them in all their forms. Most recently I ate jalapeño ones, which are crunchy.
3. Sunset. If I see sunrise, it‘s because I stayed up.
4. Books, jewelry, clothes, kitchen appliances
5. I liked all of them but fourth when I had a true monster of a teacher who I still talk about to my therapist.

I very much liked this one. High school was awful and this captured that intense desperation for me. The detective was very likable. The bit of supernatural weirdness was odd, and for me it was never properly defined whether that was real or not, but maybe that was ok? Any A+

Another audiobook, cause I can‘t shake this migraine. I read the first book in this series awhile back and this delivered more of the same simple pleasures. The only problem I had with it was that, having watched True Blood, there were enough things that were almost familiar but quite different to be a little confusing. Like Tara being a white boutique owner. But that‘s a minor issue.

Butterfinger I hope you feel better soon. 5y
Molly_the_mezzo @Butterfinger Thanks so much! 5y
rwmg It was those cartoon-like covers that first attracted me to the series. Much better than the TV-inspired ones. 5y
5feet.of.fury @rwmg I thought the covers were too cutesy, myself. I was familiar with the show and thought they should be edgier 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I liked the TV ones. 5y

I tried to do this on audio, and I couldn‘t focus on the narrator‘s accent. I may try to read it as a physical book when my headache goes away.

LibrarianRyan I had to listen to this at 1.75x the speed to get through. I would never have finished if if I was reading. 5y

My first ever audiobook that I finished! I‘m not normally drawn to audiobooks but I have had a killer migraine for about five days and today it has included a pretty good aura, so I couldn‘t see to read or even watch tv. I don‘t normally do romance either, but it‘s very well written and an interesting premise. I dated someone on the autism spectrum and I can attest that it‘s difficult, though of course less melodramatic than in the book!

britt_brooke Feel better soon! I liked this one, too. 5y

This was an interesting one, because I found the main character so unlikeable, and I think I was supposed to. Also, it took me a long time to get a grasp on what was going on with the crime. I didn‘t guess the details of the ending until a few pages before it was revealed. Also, it has some interesting things to say about mental health.

I really enjoy the way Tana French takes a minor character from the previous book in the series and turns them into a major character in the next book, so they feel familiar but also new. This book explores how family can be toxic and whether those connections are worth maintaining, and what we owe to people based solely on blood relations.

This was a re-read; I first read this several years ago. One of my favorites. The premise is deeply absurd; a detective goes undercover as a murdered woman, which she is able to do because she is her exact doppelgänger. But French takes this ridiculous thread and weaves it into a beautiful, rich tapestry that is somehow believable and wholly lovely. Utterly captivating.

Cathythoughts Good book ♥️♥️👍🏻 5y
