Only Yesterday
Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the 1920s | Frederick Lewis Allen
4 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Hailed by the Washington Post as “the one account of America in the 1920s against which all others must be measured,” Frederick Lewis Allen’s extraordinary social history takes readers back to a time of flappers and speakeasies, the first radio, unparalleled prosperity—and cataclysmic economic decline Beginning November 11, 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the end of World War I in a letter to the American public, and continuing through his defeat, Prohibition, the Big Red Scare, the rise of women’s hem lines, and the stock market crash of 1929, Only Yesterday, published just two years after the crash, chronicles a decade like no other. Allen, who witnessed firsthand the events he describes, makes the reader feel like part of history as it unfolds. This bestselling, enduring account brings to life towering historical personages including J. Pierpont Morgan, Henry Ford, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Al Capone, Babe Ruth, and Jack Dempsey. Allen provides insightful, in-depth analyses of President Warren G. Harding’s oil scandal, the growth of the auto industry, the decline of the family farm, and the long bull market of the late twenties. Peppering his narrative with actual stock quotes and breaking financial news, Allen tracks the major economic trends of the decade and explores the underlying causes of the crash. From the trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti to the inventions, crazes, and revolutions of the day, this timeless work will continue to be savored for generations to come.

So, this poor little book that I rescued from a wee free is falling apart, but I think it is okay giving its last read to such an appreciative audience. Who‘s writing a book set in the #1920s?? This is your #research bible! 🤗😂
Author‘s witty voice made the financial bits more endurable...

This writer has wry humor; I enjoy how he summarizes and reveals, taunts and sighs. Good background #research book for anyone writing about the #1920s. Unfortunately I need one more for the #1910s! Any #recommendations?
Oh! I am also reading some excellent excerpts! So if you‘re on #Instagram, I will be trying them out there Live or in Stories. 😬

I'm packing up my office (to move down the hall in a couple weeks) and I'm finding books I did not even know I had. This informal history of the 1920s is right up my alley, but I have no recollection of acquiring it.

MicheleinPhilly I've moved offices probably 5 times in 8 years and every time I discover a book I don't remember purchasing. 8y
Hollie @MicheleinPhilly that makes me feel better! 8y
JazzFeathers It's a good one, though questionable in places. I'd say good to read when one already has a grip of the era 😊 8y
Hollie @JazzFeathers good to know! That era is one of my fav historical time periods to teach! 8y
JazzFeathers @Hollie l'm just a lover of the era, but l've read extensively in preparation for my novels. Really love that time too. I think it's particularly relevant to out times 8y
