The Useful Book
The Useful Book: 201 Life Skills They Used to Teach in Home Ec and Shop | David Bowers, Sharon Bowers
10 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
A modern and energetically designed encyclopedia of DIY with everything you need to know to roll up your sleeves and cook it, build it, sew it, clean it, or repair it yourself. In other words, everything you would have learned from your shop and home ec teachers, if you'd had them. The Useful Book features 138 practical projects and how-tos, with step-by-step instructions and illustrations, relevant charts, sidebars, lists, and handy toolboxes. Theres a kitchen crash course, including the must-haves for a well-stocked pantry; how to boil an egg (and peel it frustration-free); how to grill, steam, saut, and roast vegetables. Theres Sewing 101, plus how to fold a fitted sheet, tie a tie, mop a floor, make a bed, and set the table for a formal dinner. Next up: a 21st-century shop class. The tools that everyone should have, and dozens of cool projects that teach fundamental techniques. Practice measuring, cutting, and nailing by building a birdhouse. Make a bookshelf or a riveted metal picture frame. Plus: do-it-yourself plumbing; car repair basics; and home maintenance, from priming and painting to refinishing wood floors.

This book contains 201 useful tips for daily life, covering everything from how to sew a button on a shirt to how to change a tire. It‘s a really good how to book. And, many of the tips include illustrations!

#Zeke decided to spend the afternoon with me, which I loved, but this book is large. It‘s not easy to juggle a sleeping cat and a large book. Maybe that should have been a tip...🙂 #catsoflitsy

Current reads started this year...#justfornow , my goal is to finish these soon. Well, soonish. I just know I‘ll start a #netgalley selection on Thursday, and the end of the month means I have another #agathachristieclub to read. What a good problem to have! #tuneintonovember

batsy Are you enjoying the Lucy Worsley book? I saw the documentary version of it on YouTube and am wondering if she's as entertaining in her book as she is on TV 🙂 6y
Librarybelle @batsy I love it! She is as entertaining in her book as she is on TV. She has such a personable writing style. 6y
batsy @Librarybelle Thanks! I'll bump it further up the TBR 🙂 6y

Discovered this little gem today in the summer reading pile at @MPL. I happened to open it to this page. Why are books so good at reading me?

THE grad gift. Help for hubbies who THINK they can do any home repair and morons like me who call mom no less than 10 times a year because one forgets how to boil an egg. ARC f/NetGalley and Full review here:
