Selected Stories, 1968-1994
Selected Stories, 1968-1994 | Alice Munro
10 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
WINNER OF THE 2013 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE Spanning almost thirty years and settings that range from big cities to small towns and farmsteads of rural Canada, this magnificent collection brings together twenty-eight stories by a writer of unparalleled wit, generosity, and emotional power. In her Selected Stories, Alice Munro makes lives that seem small unfold until they are revealed to be as spacious as prairies and locates the moments of love and betrayal, desire and forgiveness, that change those lives forever. To read these stories--about a traveling salesman and his children on an impromptu journey; an abandoned woman choosing between seduction and solitude--is to succumb to the spell of a writer who enchants her readers utterly even as she restores them to their truest selves.

vivastory Oh, that's so sad. I've read only one of her books but I loved it. 2mo
Leftcoastzen @vivastory I read a collection of hers cover to cover but haven‘t read this one except one or two stories. Hope you are doing well! 2mo
vivastory @Leftcoastzen You too! How's your mom? 2mo
Leftcoastzen @vivastory I‘m doing ok, mom not so good , many medical issues that can‘t be fixed . 2mo
vivastory I'm really sorry to hear that. It's so difficult to see loved ones go through medical problems 💔 2mo

#SummerSpecial #CanadaDay A day late to celebrate, some of my favorite Canadian authors! Does John Irving count since he moved to Toronto? 😄

Melissa_J I think I just might be the only Canadian who hasn't read Alice Munro 😳 7y
Lcsmcat @melissa_j My sister studied with her at Bennington, which was my introduction to her work. You should try her. 7y

Pisses me off every time I teach this. Who cares what Franzen thinks?

merelybookish Because Franzen's opinion means more than the Nobel Prize. 😡 7y
vivastory I've not yet read Franzen. I can't exactly say I feel like I'm missing out, which I do feel like I'm missing out that I haven't read Munro. 7y
Joybishoptx Haha! Franzen....love to hate 7y

Lazy day inside today after spending *too* many hours drinking beer at HopCat last night. 'Wild Swans' in this collection was recommended in The Argonauts as being a story that accurately handles young, female sexuality and that it does. It was terrifying, sensual and freeing and definitely worth the read.

Fun Friday Canadian-style 🇨🇦🇨🇦: Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Louise Penny, Michael Ondaatje. Making my list made me realize I have to expand my reading borders! @Liberty (Full disclosure: Photo is not mine. I could not find the credit.)

Spiderfelt Doh! Another great Canadian I forgot to include in my list: Michael Ondaatje. 8y
