Take the Slow Road: Scotland
Take the Slow Road: Scotland: Inspirational Journeys Round the Highlands, Lowlands and Islands of Scotland by Camper Van and Motorhome | Martin Dorey
2 posts | 3 to read
Forget hurrying. Forget putting your foot down and racing through sweeping bends. Forget the understeer (whatever that is). Forget the blur of a life lived too fast. This is a look at taking life slowly. It's about taking the time to enjoy journeys and places for their own sake. It's about stopping and putting the kettle on. Stopping to take a picture. Stopping to enjoy stopping. How are you going to do it? In a camper van or a motorhome, of course. In this book we define the best driving routes around Scotland for camper vans and motorhomes. We show you the coolest places to stay, what to see, what to do and explain why it's special. We meander around the highlands, lowlands and islands of Scotland on the most breathtaking roads, chugging up mountain passes and pootling along the coast. We show you stuff that's fun, often free. We include the best drives for different kinds of drivers; for surfers, wildlife watchers, climbers and walkers. We include the steepest, the bendiest, those with the most interesting bridges or views or obstacles, ferries and tidal causeways. And you don't even have to own a camper van or motorhome we'll tell you the many places you can rent one to take you on the journey. All of this is interspersed with beautiful photos, handy maps and quirky travel writing from the king of camper vans and motorhomes, Martin Dorey. So if all you want to do is flick through it on a cold day and plan your next outing, you'll be transported (albeit slowly) to pastures, beaches, mountains and highways that make you want to turn the key and go, go, go! We'll take you to see Scotland the slow way. The way it should be seen.

Sorry Cynthia and Cindy, I haven‘t been playing along this month, due to extreme work-related nonsense. Anyway, I‘ve had a few days off so feeling a bit more like me again and hope to get back to Litsying again.

From the tagged camping book, hopefully we‘ll get to go to Skye soon, along with many other wonderful Scottish islands.

TrishB Hope you‘ve had a lovely little break. I know all about those work related nonsenses- hope they get better!! 5y
Cathythoughts Thinking of you Helen ... 👍🏻♥️ 5y
squirrelbrain Thanks @TrishB @Cathythoughts - partly my own fault as I can‘t stop myself from working silly hours... well, I‘m sure I could if I tried! That‘s my challenge for next week then; to do less work... 😁 5y
BarbaraBB I hope you‘ve had a great time. Skye has been on my bucketlist for ages too 😘 5y
CrowCAH Looks beautiful! No worries, life happens; we understand. 😘 5y

Quite fortuitously my husband just bought me this book on campervanning in #Scotland!

Apparently some of the campsites and beaches are just gorgeous! I‘ve only been as a child and can you believe my husband has never been to Scotland - it‘s less than 3 hours away!

Cathythoughts Sounds like a great trip to make 👍🏻 5y
TrishB The beaches are gorgeous, esp if you get the weather. 5y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks When I saw your name it made me think of what happened last night!! Something woke me up at 1230 am scratching and carrying on in the wall and attic! I had the exterminator over at 8 am and we think a squirrel may have gotten in!!! I was scared to death!!! 😫😫😫 5y
Oryx You need to go now, for sure! 5y
Susannah I‘d love to tour Scotland by road. Being from the US, though, the left-side driving might be a challenge. 😉 5y
squirrelbrain @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - sorry about that - must have been one of my American cousins! 🤣 🐿 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @squirrelbrain must have been!! He needs to come visit you!! 😫🙀 5y

Hooked_on_books Scotland is amazing! I‘ve been 3 times and spent a month in Edinburgh on one of those trips. I find it‘s the places we‘re closest to that we often never quite get to. I met someone working at a hotel 10-15 minutes from Stonehenge who‘d never been. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
squirrelbrain How funny that you‘ve been more times than my husband @Hooked_on_books ! Mind you, we have a joke that he goes to New York more than he goes to Leeds (where I work every day!) 5y
emmaturi Everytime I go back to Scotland to see my family, I make sure I go and visit new places. So just recently went to the Orkney Islands, amazing place! 5y
