Great origin story for a detective series, and I plan to read more. Aloysius Archer has just gotten out of prison because he is an idiot who loses his sense when a pretty woman is nice to him. He then quickly stumbles upon some shady dealings and murders in the small town he has been placed in to serve parole and helps solve the crimes. But because he is still an idiot, he ends up a suspect.

Great start to a series of an ex-con trying to get by and out of jail, but finds himself in a questionable trouble.

⭐⭐1/2
The story had potential, but it fell short for me. Dopey deputies, over the top villains, and (I assume unintentional) campy dialogue certainly didn't help matters. As a huge fan of The Camel Club, I had high hopes for this one, but it just didn't deliver.

I thought this was a good book. I really liked the mc Archer, there will definitely be more books from him. Not read a bad Baldacci book yet!

I started listening to this audiobook while working at my desk. My husband heard part of it, got hooked, so I could only listened to it while he was around. Great murder mystery, it was hard to decide who the guilty party was

🎧 it took me a minute to get into the book because it‘s set in the 1940‘s but it drew me in and while it was a bit predictable it was narrated in a way that made it feel written like an old detective novel. It‘s definitely worth a listen! I enjoyed it ⭐️⭐️⭐️7/8

I started reading this book after I finish the Memory Man series by the same author. This book is very similar to those. Set in the 1940s I found myself transported to that time period. A great mystery/detective novel.

A stand alone set in the late 1940s. Archer is released from prison and will do everything possible to not go back. Through almost no fault of his own, he may end up there anyway. This is part who dunnit and part good old fashioned detective work. Baldacci has written another great book!!!
