Broken Man on a Halifax Pier
Broken Man on a Halifax Pier | Lesley Choyce
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A tale of one mans shipwrecked life and an unlikely crew of rescuers. Fifty-five-year-old Charles Howard has lost his long-time journalism job and has been swindled out of his life savings. Standing by the edge of Halifax Harbour on a foggy morning, contemplating his dismal future, his ritual of self-pity is interrupted with the appearance of the mysterious and beguiling Ramona Danforth. And so begins a most interesting relationship. On a whim, Charles asks Ramona to drive him to his childhood home, Stewart Harbour, a fishing village populated by rugged individualists far down Nova Scotias remote Eastern Shore. Charles left the Harbour immediately after graduating from high school and never looked back. And now that he's returned, the past starts catching up with him in ways he could never have imagined.

I‘ve had a galley of this book for nearly 3 years. 🫣 So bad, I know, but I am so glad I finally read it. What a hidden gem.

Older characters than I usually read, an unconventional romance of sorts, a lot of family drama, lovely descriptions of the sea and a small Nova Scotian fishing town, aging and disease, some slightly outlandish events that somehow worked beautifully, and a big ol‘ hurricane. I was so absorbed in this story!

shawnmooney Oh this one is new to me and your review has me intrigued! Any chance I could get you to come on Zoom and chat with me about this book for 15 minutes for my Bite-sized Book Chats series? The playlist is here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU-61cZp1pQdBH5V0Zb9q-2ujl4PY8nhf. Would be fantastic to have you on as a guest! (edited) 2y
Shemac77 My home province! And the title is from a Stan Rogers song. Our unofficial provincial anthem. Every Nova Scotian knows it: Barrett‘s Privateers. 2y
sprainedbrain @Shemac77 they talk about the song a lot in the book, enough to entice me to find it and listen! ❤️ 2y

I‘ve tried to read this one for a few months now and I can‘t get past the part I‘m stuck at. I just can‘t. I liked that I could recognize the parts of Halifax the author mentioned but the book was moving too slow and the characters were hard to like. Maybe I‘ll pick it back up later 🤷‍♀️

Morning read and coffee on this rainy, dreary day. It seems fitting that I read a local book before I leave Nova Scotia.

This is a sweet story of a man and a woman finding each other in the most unexpected way and time. They work together (and at times look like they‘ll fail each other) to overcome childhood trauma, commitment issues, familial disputes, fears of what the future holds, and finding inner strength when everything around them seems to falls apart. It‘s a lovely story of two people finding love when they thought those days were over for them.
