Falling into the Fire
Falling into the Fire: A Psychiatrist's Encounters with the Mind in Crisis | Christine Montross
4 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
A woman habitually commits self-injury, ingesting light bulbs, a box of nails, zippers and a steak knife. A new mother is admitted with incessant visions of harming her child. A recent graduate, dressed in a tunic and declaring that love emanates from everything around him, is brought to A&E by his alarmed girlfriend. These are among the patients new physician Christine Montross meets during rounds at her hospitals locked inpatient ward and who we meet as she struggles to understand the mysteries of the mind, most especially when the tools of modern medicine are failing us. Beautifully written and deeply felt, Falling into the Fire is an intimate portrait of psychiatry and a moving reminder, in the words of the New York Times, of our fragile, shared humanity.

This was fun! I'm going to do another after this one.

Falling into the fire just after sunset;
Never knowing full dark no stars,
In a sunburned country.

Nothing like a poem about dying to get your creative spirit flowing!

This book was REAL GOOD. Montross balances clinical study and empathetic humanity with ease. She lifts the veil that we think Drs keep between medicine and their personal lives to show us just how much one influences the other. The writing isn't particularly impressive, but there are a few lovely passages. Would recommend!

Half my city's out of power? Books don't use electricity! 😁 Great excuse to do nothing but read today.
