Iced in Paradise: A Leilani Santiago Hawai'i Mystery | Naomi Hirahara
8 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Leilani Santiago is back in her birthplace, the Hawaiian island of Kauai, to help keep afloat the family business, a shave ice shack. When she goes to work one morning, she stumbles across a dead body, a young pro surfer who was being coached by her estranged father. As her father soon becomes the No. 1 murder suspect, Leilani must find the real killer and somehow safeguard her ill mother, little sisters, and grandmother while also preserving a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend in Seattle.

This was an enjoyable read. The mystery is not too involved but not super simple, and there are some discussion of more serious issues such as shady dealings over land rights and families wrestling with addiction. But also a headstrong MC pursuing an amateur murder investigation, hints of romance, and lots of food.

Susanita One of the characters is a bit OTT but the rest are okay. 4y

I‘m making a quick pivot to this book so I can return it three months later and at the same time pick up a hold at the library that‘s farthest from me.
1. Hawaiian woman investigates surfer‘s murder
2. Litsy!
3. I‘d go back to 2006. Some good things happened that year.

September fiction wrap up!
I‘ll highlight the two cozy mysteries: Iced in a Paradise is set at a shave ice shop in Hawaii and A Deadly Inside Scoop at an ice cream shop in Ohio

Because I don‘t have enough books to read in June, I put this on hold at a neighboring county‘s library that‘s starting curbside service next week. This is a #blameitonlitsy but I don‘t remember who suggested it. Thanks also to @umbrellagirl for the Connecticut recommendation! #50states #mystery #paradise #boundtogetherjune

There‘s not too too much intrigue to this mystery story, but I liked it anyway. The characters were enjoyable and believable and I want to go back to Hawaii SO BAD.

On to a mystery where the victim is not a woman! (Only one apparent victim so far and he is definitely a man.) #readharder2020

khooliha How important are snow cones? I hope the answer is "very." 5y
holarosarita @khooliha The family runs a shave ice stand. I‘m hoping for a “they just found a sticky multicolored puddle next to the body—the perfect crime...” reveal. 5y
khooliha @holarosarita It turns out I, too, want that. Keep us posted! 5y

A good read with a family story at the heart of the mystery. Or a mystery at the heart of a family story. Unlike some mysteries, where the characters fit into the plot like puzzle pieces, these characters breathe and leave footprints when they walk around the beautiful Hawaiian locale. It kept me guessing until the end, but the solution is the least that I take away from this novel. Good for those who like a little mystery with their family drama.

I listened to my kid and for the first time in years ordered books NOT from Amazon. It took a bit longer, but the truth is there was no need for me to have it in 2 days, or a few hours. Feels nice and easy - lazy even.
