so-soI had to bail about 35% in. It was just too stressful it‘s like reading a documentary about a recent catastrophic fire in an area not too far from my home. It‘s well-written and interesting, just too overwhelming for me to keep going.
so-soI love the premise of this book, but the execution, which I listened to as an audiobook, I found lacking. It may have been me and not the book, so take this with a grain of salt. Iyer travels the world visiting holy lands in search of peace, enlightenment, paradise. There were some truly brilliant sentences but as a whole, I found it difficult to engage with. I definitely think I should have read this physical book instead of audio.
pickGioconda Belli was recently stripped of her Nicaraguan citizenship along with 93 others. I don't think it was president Ortega's intention to remind me that this novel of hers was on my TBR, but it did, and now hopefully you can add it to yours and we can increase the readership of authors who resist their fascist governments. The novel is about Adam and Eve: Belli has fun showing us what a world without history looks like from their vantage.
pickLoved reading this book. Not an author I normally look for but his writing is stunning. His thoughts on how to live in this world here and now often breaks your heart. On top of it all it‘s also an amazkng travel guide. Travel the world and never leave your reading chair.

pickThis is the story of the Camp Fire in 2018, which killed 85 people and burned Paradise, California (pop. 27,000) to the ground. The human stories of this disaster are just devastating, and the authors have done remarkable work in collecting and arranging them. Worst, of course, was knowing that even as you're reading, the same stories are re-happening and on an even larger scale. And for that tragedy I have no words.
