Captain Jack Aubrey is ashore on half pay without a command - until Stephen Maturin arrives with secret orders for Aubrey to take a frigate to the Cape of Good Hope under a commodore's pennant, there to mount an expedition against the French-held islands of Mauritius and La Reunion. But the difficulties of carrying out his orders are compounded by two of his own captains - Lord Clonfert, a pleasure-seeking dilettaante, and captain Corbett, whose severity pushes his crew to the verge of mutiny.

A re-read: I‘ve gone through most of the Patrick O‘Brian books already, but this fits both #ReadingAfrica2022 for #Mauritius #Réunion, and #Booked2022 #Nautical, so I went back to it. A bit of a cheat because it doesn‘t really get into Mauritian culture at all, just conflict between France and England with these African islands as some of the many pawns. Not my favourite in the series, as others do get a bit more into culture and science.

If you like solid history and a rousing story, this is for you. Hornblower redone with better history and amusing writing. Read one and you will want them all.
