Crucial Interventions
Crucial Interventions: Or, an Illustrated Treatise on the Principles & Practices of Surgery | Richard Barnett
4 posts | 2 read
The nineteenth century saw a complete transformation of the practice and reputation of surgery. Crucial Interventions follows its increasingly optimistic evolution, drawing from the very best examples of rare surgical textbooks with a focus on the extraordinary visual materials of the mid-nineteenth century. Unnerving and graphic, yet beautifully rendered, these fascinating illustrations include step-by-step surgical techniques paired with medical instruments and painted depictions of operations in progress. Arranged for the layman from head to toe, and accompanied by an authoritative, eloquent and inspiring narrative from medical historian Richard Barnett, author of 2014 bestseller The Sick Rose, Crucial Interventions is a unique and captivating book on one of the world's most mysterious and macabre professions, and promises to be another success.

Got this email from my mom, I think I need to create a crash course in YA for this new high school librarian. #litervention #bookmergency

398.2 Yes! Do you know what your going to recommend? 6y
BillBlume #Litervention” might be the most brilliant hashtag I‘ve ever seen on Litsy. 6y

BookFreakOut @398.2 There‘s so much, where do I even start??? I‘m most familiar w/SFF and can easily give recs for that. I‘m less certain about contemporary, romance, poetry, but I‘m thinking Jason Reynolds, Nicola Yoon, Angie Thomas, Maurene Goo, Sandhya Menon as a good start for those, other ideas welcome! BookRiot has lots of good curated lists, so I‘ll probably send her there and of course, show her Litsy! 6y
BookFreakOut @BillBlume Haha, thanks! It seemed pretty appropriate. 😆 6y
ElyssaReads Yeah Hannah! 6y

Pickpick

What's with all the questions and strange looks about my book? It's only an illustrated book on the practices of 19th century surgeons! I mean who doesn't want to see really gross illustrations of diseased human anatomy? Gross but interesting.

I would like to take a moment to praise how stoic these mandibulofacial surgery patients appear in a time before anesthesia 🙌🏻

This book is worth picking up for the plates alone. The historical drawings and charts of anatomy, surgery, and tools of the trade are fascinating. The reading is interesting, but not very in depth, and I do wish the type for the Fig.s was larger/laid out better, but overall a prized text. ❤️💉🔪
