I Remain in Darkness
I Remain in Darkness | Annie Ernaux
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Washington Post Top Memoir of 1999 An extraordinary evocation of a grown daughters attachment to her mother, and of both womens strength and resiliency. "I Remain in Darkness" recounts Annies attempts first to help her mother recover from Alzheimers disease, and then, when that proves futile, to bear witness to the older womans gradual decline and her own experience as a daughter losing a beloved parent. "I Remain in Darkness" is a new high water mark for Ernaux, surging with raw emotional power and her sublime ability to use language to apprehend her own lifes particular music.

Incredibly sad diary from her mother's last years.

My mother's neigbour is in tears... I offer her a chocolate but she shakes her head, raising her ugly, puffed face. It breaks my heart. So does the following scene: as I bend forward to check the safety catch of my mother's wheelchair, she leans over and kisses my hair. How can I survive that kiss, such love, my mother, my mother

Pickpick

Ernaux mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer. This is the last years of her mother‘s at a home. After visiting her mother, Ernaux would write down a few sentences in loose papers. Those papers have turned into this slim book of 100p. And it‘s so powerful and makes you think about old age.

5th book for #MarvellousMarch and #MarchMadness @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES

vlwelser Ernaux is on my list of authors to explore more. I love her writing. And the short books help. 2y
AnneCecilie @vlwelser I tend to not like short books, I feel that they not fleshed out enough. But Ernaux writing is so concise, that for me they just work. 2y
