J Robert Lennon‘s debut novel is good but he has grown a lot ever since.
This one is about a plane crashing in Montana. We follow a few people who are affected by the crash in one way or another. A couple who live nearby, a man waiting for his girlfriend, a survivor. They grow on you and they‘re great characters. It‘s just that I am spoiled by Lennon‘s later works (I just purchased some more books from his backlist 🤷🏻‍♀️🤭) #192025 #1997

I Remain in Darkness | Annie Ernaux

Ernaux mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer. This is the last years of her mother‘s at a home. After visiting her mother, Ernaux would write down a few sentences in loose papers. Those papers have turned into this slim book of 100p. And it‘s so powerful and makes you think about old age.

vlwelser Ernaux is on my list of authors to explore more. I love her writing. And the short books help. 13mo
AnneCecilie @vlwelser I tend to not like short books, I feel that they not fleshed out enough. But Ernaux writing is so concise, that for me they just work. 13mo

Not chockfull of Yuletide cheer! It was rather unsettling and darker than I expected. This book wouldn‘t encourage me to read others in the series. Fortunately, I am a devoted fan of Joan Hess‘ Claire Malloy - an intrepid bookseller with a quick wit and sharp sense of humor, so I still overall enjoyed it.

When Peter pokes fun at Claire‘s predictability, she tries to be unpredictable by accepting a unique invitation ⬇️

Librarybelle This is a series I‘ve yet to read! 1y
mabell @Librarybelle It tends toward the wacky 😄 My favorite is Mummy Dearest - a terrific mystery, and all the better because it takes place in Egypt and I love ancient Egyptian history! 1y
Clwojick This one looks fun! ❤️ 1y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Also, if you like Egypt and mysteries... have you read the Amelia Peabody series? 1y
mabell @Clwojick I liked it - but not good bedtime reading 🤣 1y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks Yes, but just the first one! It was excellent. Even though I have almost all of them on my shelves 🙄, I haven‘t read further. It‘s one of those series I just don‘t think about getting to! 1y
CarolynM @mabell I encourage you to get Amelia off the shelf & start reading. They get better & better for quite a while before tailing off. Joan Hess was a close friend of Elizabeth Peters & I believe they shared a similar sense of humour. JH completed the Amelia book that EP was working on when she died. I‘ve never gotten around to JH‘s books, so I‘m going to take my own advice & get on to it, starting with Mummy Dearest since you‘re recommending it 😆 1y
TheAromaofBooks I'm with @CarolynM - the Amelia books are just delightful. Like all long series, there are some that are better than others, but overall I just love the characters so much. She actually has characters age and grow throughout, and the setting is so realistic that after I finished that series, I was reading a nonfiction book about Egyptian archeology and kept half-expecting their names to crop up 😂 (edited) 1y
mabell @CarolynM I knew that their names both appeared on one of the last books - makes sense it was a posthumous completion. They obviously had a shared love of Egyptology! I‘m sure I have the second one in the Amelia Peabody, so I‘ll pull it out to remind me to get to it soon! Mummy Dearest is fairly late in the series, but I don‘t think it would be a problem to start there. Plus it‘s my favorite 🤷‍♀️😆 1y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks That‘s high praise! I know I would enjoy them too! Looking back, I think the reason I didn‘t jump right into the next one was that I was on the edge on my seat for most of Crocodile on the Sandbank! In case the Curse of the Pharaohs was equally suspenseful/intense (for me), I had to be ready 🤣 1y

Deep Waters | Jayne Ann Krentz

Mehso-so

From water philosophies to murder to spaceships, this #1997 novel by Krentz has quite a lot of quirky elements. I listened to it, and I was not a fan of the voice narration. Plus, the male lead was just creepy - the choice of voice by the narrator did not help. Krentz builds great romantic suspense, and this one did not disappoint in the romance category. I have enjoyed others by her more than this one; just an okay read for me. #192025

Kind of interesting, kind of meh. Glad to get it off my #TBR but if I hadn‘t had it both in print to poke through and #audio from the library to listen while walking, I‘m not sure I would have finished it. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #19822022 #1997 @Librarybelle

Sapphire I picked this up at a used book sale somewhere just because it was an Allende I hadn‘t heard of. When I went to read it a few months back I was surprised and abandoned it pretty quickly. Maybe I will go back someday. But definitely not before I read Violeta. 2y
Julsmarshall @Sapphire I got it from a used bookstore too and was also pretty surprised! 😳 2y

Jane Austen: A Life | Claire Tomalin

Pickpick

Tomalin brings Austen to life by examining her family, her residences, her works, and the current affairs of the day. I learned a few new things about Jane, which is always good! The tone of this biography at times seemed very conversational, so I felt like I was chatting with a friend. Very interesting read! #19822022 #1997 #FabulousFebruary #Readathon

Deja Dead: A Novel | Kathy Reichs

TV show, Bones, is based upon this series. Tempe Brennan, Quebec‘s director of forensic anthropology, is in search of a serial killer which has killed her best friend and has her daughter in mortal danger. A slow beginning but fascinating look of working in a coroner‘s office. Harrowing plot and characters. Impeccable writing and suspenseful. Looking forward to book 2 and recommended to those who love gripping thrillers.

EadieB @Scochrane26 Thanks! I just looked him up. Brendan Reichs. He wrote Nemesis and Genesis which were best sellers. Also has a series called Vitals and DarkDeep. 4y
Crazeedi I've read the first few of this series, then I quit reading them, not sure why because they were good 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi just mailed some books to you. 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB you did??? Thank you Eadie! You are too kind my friend!!💕💕 4y
TrishB A great series 👍🏻 she‘s had a rest for a few years due to health reasons but has a new one out this year, I‘m looking forward to getting reacquainted with Temperance! (edited) 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi cleaning out my shelves and saw some books you mentioned you wanted (edited) 4y
EadieB @TrishB I‘m going to start watching her TV series but I want to finish more of her books. 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB @EadieB @Crazeedi @Scochrane26 Read the first 7 so far and really enjoyed them, even if she does make some stupid decisions. I enjoyed even more the YA Virals series she wrote with her son Brendan, definitely recommend them but read in order. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I will have to check out (edited) 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB you amaze me!! 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I'm not sure where I stopped. I think when they started making it a tv series, I opted out of books, it ticked me for some reason 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I know, stupid, right? 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi The Jack Reacher film had the same effect on me with the books so far from stupid, or we both are. 😂 4y
rwmg I liked the books. I was prepared to like the TV series but then I really didn't like the overall story arc in the 3rd season (which was truncated anyway due to IIRR a TV technicians' strike) and stopped watching and reading. 4y
EadieB @rwmg I hate that when the TV show or movie doesn‘t do justice to the books. 4y
