Napoleon's Last Island
Napoleon's Last Island | Thomas Keneally
7 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
On the island of St Helena in the south Atlantic ocean, Napoleon spends his last years in exile. It is a hotbed of gossip, and secret liaisons, where a blind eye is turned to relations between colonials and slaves. The disgraced emperor is subjected to vicious and petty treatment by his captors, but he forges an unexpected ally: a rebellious British girl, Betsy, who lives on the island with her family and becomes his unlikely friend. Based on fact, Napoleon's Last Island is the surprising story of one of history's most enigmatic figures and a British family who dared to associate with him. It is a tale of vengeance, duplicity and loyalty, and of a man whose charisma made him dangerous to the end.

DNF YET...I have tried a couple of times to make it past the first few chapters. I read a review today that once again piqued my interest i put it on hold again. Will the third time be the charm?

Trying to finish this book so I can move on to others. It was slow-going at first, but I'm really enjoying it now.

Getting in some reading before Poldark comes on. I've been trying to get into this book since Friday, but it's been slow going. I have high hopes, as it's written by the author of Schindler's List, but I don't know. Anyone else read this?

rubyslippersreads No, but it's on my TBR list. 8y

The premise of this novel sounded really interesting but unfortunately the story never gripped me and the characters weren't compelling. The setting was mildly interesting but it was a chore to get through this book 😕

More from this morning's bookstore run. I knew I had to get El Paso after hearing Winston Groom on NPR earlier this week. I've not heard anything about Napoleon's Last Island, but it looked like a good one and is written by the author of Schindler's List. These weren't the only books I bought today... #bookhaul #nosuchthingastoomanybooks

LeahBergen I want BOTH of these! 😩😩 8y
