I recently reread this with a new eye for analysis; what a great book! Funny, insightful, and so many hidden and not-so-hidden names, symbols, themes, etc. It‘s a great examination of indigenous lives and the tug-of-war between heritage and modern society. A great read.

Strong characters interacting in King‘s near hallucinogenic story structure, making this one of the more surreal tellings of his- something that I am coming to expect especially accompanied by humor and wit (let‘s just call it satire). King is gentle to the settler, but makes evident settler failings. Great read.

Yet another month where I read a ridiculous amount. I figure my numbers are bound to go down now I'm done with Marvel Unlimited.

I AM disappointed I only cleared one older book from La TBR, but I did a pretty good job of ploughing through my 2018 purchases. Likewise, I'm sad I didn't read any 5-star books, but GREEN GRASS, RUNNING WATER was a hell of a 4.5er and I'll take it.

Y'all, I loved this so much I almost don't want to talk about it. It's a gorgeous mosaic of mythological equivalencies, storytelling gambits, and painfully real people. King builds so much momentum that the sheer weight of story becomes a boulder rushing downhill. I read it in a day because I HAD TO.

I think that's all I've got. You should read it.

When I was at uni I used to thrift $3-or-less litfic that was liable to land on an English class's syllabus, read it, and resell it in the student bookstore at a good markup.

Every so often, I read something so good I had to keep it instead of selling it on.

I've been thinking about that today because GREEN GRASS, RUNNING WATER is exactly the sort of book I would've snatched up back then, and I'd never have sold it because it's fucking amazing.

This book was a good multi-layered magical realismish story about several characters converging on a reserve in southern Alberta for the sun dance. I would have liked it better if I hadn‘t been told that it was extremely funny, because I found it just sort of amusing.

This book contains sections where Coyote's noisy dream attempts to tell the creation story, while Coyote and others improve upon it. 😆

For #canadianauthors I went with those that were either born or have lived in Canada. Since while Thomas King is American his stories are mostly set in Canada from his experiences living here. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

As always, Thomas King is amazing. This book was wonderful. It was also very cool to read a story set in southern Alberta.

Weird but captivating and very enjoyable

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this book is amazing. It's funny, almost like dry British humor kind of funny, and just SO layered. 10/10 would definitely, aggressively recommend.

"Under the bad points, says Robinson Crusoe, as a civilized white man, it has been difficult not having someone of color around whom I could educate and protect." (325) omg this book is amazing. The SASS of it is just bonkers.

I found it hard to get into this book at first, but luckily it had enough funny moments to keep me in until everything just seemed to click.
